Internet access problem / Vista update

One of my work mates has just called,

Since yesterday his samsung laptop has been unable to connect to the internet.

Provider is 02 , called them, hard wired to the router, did a system roll back to 2 days ago and it works fine.

They are suggesting its a windows vista hotfix thats causing the error.

Problem is when she reboots from cold the problem is still there, do a roll back it connects fine.

Strangely they advised to complete system restore the laptop from the discs supplied.

Now my thinking is obviously its something to do with a hotfix or culumaantive security update thats altered some settings.

Should i

1. remove the hotfix manually then disable automatic updates.

2. Tell them to restore from master disc ( cant really see this curing the problem as the next update will cause the error again.) as advised by 02

Now looking back on my Vista rig there have been updates around this time which have the KB prefixes that i can investigate but was wondering if theres some other solution or others are experiencing the same problems as my friend.

Ive just noticed i have service pack 2 ready for update on my vista rig. Anyone had any issues relating to internet connections since that update?

Rig is a Samsung laptop, Vista and 02 broadband.

If it's a certain WindowsUpd8 failure that left no option than to force-quit it, leading to not being able to connect to the upd8 thing from that point. A rebuild was the only simple way I found out of it. Other that carrying on using it with no upd8s.

Don't know if downloaded upd8 executable would help.

Im thinking the laptop is saying "Limited Connection". If that is the case then try setting up a static IP on the laptop temporary and see if the Internet comes. Although its not a fix, for me if I set it up back to Dynamic, it used to go back to normal operation.

Anyways I doubt it will work though.

I would go with option 1 but you should just disable the current hotfix that is causing the problem from downloading/installing and allow other future ones to download and install.
