International purchases?

Heya guys,

So due to the recent coronavirus outbreak, I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone in here still buys stuff from China and/or nearby countries. Or if you have done a stop and purchasing an item from somewhere else due to the outbreak?...

Since after looking around on Facebook etc, some people still do buy from China, even though the logistics are very slow there, and some are completely off from doing that.

It's not that big of an outbreak tbh. Coronavirus is a family of viruses. The correct name is nCov/COVID-19, or novel coronavirus.

It's only getting the media attention because it's a new strain that was not previously known and infecting Chinese people extremely quickly. This is because they have over a billion people in close proximity to each other.

Outside of that it's not likely, as in extremely unlikely, for it to be transported by plane or sea. Sea travel for sure would kill the viruses. Plane is possible but only if it's infected a human. It cannot survive on surfaces for long and requires a host.

Now if you were in China, yeah you'd be pretty screwed. That's why all the cases in the US where people are getting infected are coming from China. That's also why the US sent out involuntary(aka mandatory) plans for US citizens to leave China in a secure environment they set up. To prevent random travel back to the US and control all the people coming home for isolation.

So long story short, yeah I buy what I need and don't really care where it comes from... Everybody is fine so far. If you're healthy and feeling fine you are totally just that. Fine. Just check the CDC, WHO, or you're governments health department for information. Don't trust anything else. Especially media.

My cat Hurley had to be put to sleep because of Corona virus, in 2005. In cats it's incurable. I gave her the best life I could, before having to have her put to sleep. Similar effect though, basically over time her lungs filled with fluid and she couldn't breathe.

Any way, I wouldn't be paranoid. That is what the news wants.

I'd also look at the facts. Some one your age has more chance of dying in your sleep dude. Flu and pneumonia are far more dangerous.

As for the rest, basically perfectly summed it up. Paranoia means more clicks and views which means more money for them. Sad world we live in where causing mass panic and anxiety is worth the money.

Went to Morrisons the other day, because my brother was coming round with his wife and kids and we had ran out of sanitiser, we are using a fair bit at the moment because he has a 3 month old.


Got to Morrisons and they were sold out of it, and all the normal flu and cold medication, went up the road to the Sainsburys and they were sold out as well.


Ended up having to go to the town centre and pay for parking to walk around the town centre to find somewhere that still had some in stock, and the worse thing was they had basically doubled the price of the stuff because they knew fools were panic buying the stuff.


I bought a bottle that was big enough to last and then ordered some online for delivery.

bear in mind that this is a season shift now, so the typical flu is spreading. Might be the genuine reason for the shortage. Especially if Morissons rely on importing that product most likely. And product shortage means higher demand so cost will definately rise.

I see... Well I'm more worried about my parents, since they are both around 60 and even plus that. And we have both heart diseases and diabetes in the family. Hence me also asking here to hear your inputs.

It's not a legit source. I got my sources from WHO, CDC, and the US Department of Health(or your Greek Governments equal if you want to check). The people doing the investigations and really should be the only source you should trust.


It's good you are looking after your parents and family, but be alert and not anxious. Just check official documentation and don't trust the media.

You don't need sanitiser that's complete malarky it causes more health issues than it solves just wash your hands with soap and water! And if you're out and about and need to wipe your hands then alcohol wipes or similar will do just fine.
