Intel X38 Express Chipset Surfaces

Looking for an alternative to the DFI X38 based motherboard? We have X38 based offerings from manufacturers. Personally I think the Intel 'Bonetrail' looks the goods...

Fully agreed that Bonetrail looks like the best out of all of them... Stupid friggin companies and their heatpipes that don't work worth a fark!

Intel knows whats up, luff me t3h Intel mobos.

Almost didn't notice the release of P35 mobos, and now X38.

Looking good, I think it's time to get a new computer...

*Looking at the Bonetrail* :boink:

abit are also showing 2 X38 mobos

IX38-MAX

IX38 QuadGT using DDR2 (yaay I don't have to buy DDR3)

So what's the point? X38 is all about next gen tech, such as DDR3, PCI-Express 2.0 etc...

The point is that I (& others) can get the Penryn support, dual x16 Crossfire etc. without having to buy yet another type of RAM at premium introductory prices & which probably will have little impact on performance.

DFI & Gigabyte at least are also doing X38s with DDR2 so presumably they think that there is a market for that approach ...

to quote Anandtech

" Based on our early information we should see the more performance oriented DDR2 motherboards outperforming their DDR3 counterparts until DDR3 latencies and speeds are greatly improved. "

"That brings us to the $64,000 question: is DDR3 worth the additional 2x cost premium over DDR2 in current market prices? Based on our performance results, the answer would be a qualified no for the time being."

or perhaps you prefer [H]ardOCP?

"The fact of the matter is that unless you are running benchmarks, there are no current application benefits that DDR3 can deliver. DDR3 like most technologies is on the market before its time. AMD's roadmaps will attest to that as it is not bringing its next-generation Barcelona or Agena cores to market with a DDR3 controller. Another testament to the fact that the reality of a huge migration to DDR3 is some ways off is that this new Intel chipset also supports DDR2. Intel knows that DDR3 is far from being a true option to the likes of DDR2, at least for the enthusiast crowd.

In our DDR2 and DDR3 testing, which will be published this week, we have seen DDR3 net no real world benefits. Quite simply there is not a reason to move to DDR3 currently, especially if you have invested in DDR2 lately that you can travel down your upgrade path with."

:p :haha:

Mr. Popo pls try and add something constructive to the discussion at hand instead of simply inserting smilies. You can be our new Eguy....

Hi Buff, you certainly have a good point in regards to DDR3 and whether it will be worth early adoption, which in my opinion it won't. It's very much the same as the move from DDR to DDR2, which we are seeing the maturity of the platform now. Thanks for the including the external quotes which further reinforces the discussion at hand.

It really is too early at this point to see what's going to happen with DDR3. Who knows it might flop like RDRAM, leaving all DDR3 motherboard adopters without any decent memory modules.

With the new dominator speeds i really doubt that ;)

ALL DDR3 modules are using 1.5v - 1.7v (1,066MHz kit using 1.5v, that's just wrong).

Why? cause that's the "standard", but it should handle higher V's than DDR2... so better latencies are just a matter of higher V's.

Which in terms is better. If its handling higher speeds than DDR2 now with lower volts then that means with the same amount of volts as DDR2 just think of the speeds then!

Well, again to quote [H]'s motherboard editor "support for ram you can't really buy today that will actually run slower alot of the time than the DDR 2 memory that costs far less."

Now, I don't think that anyone is saying that DDR3 won't eclipse DDR2 in the long run but that for the next year or so as it improves, production ramps up & prices fall that we won't see noticeable performance benefits from it & of course in terms of vfm it will be far worse.

Pretty much a similar scenario as moving from DDR to DDR2.

to quote Anandtech again

"DDR3 at introduction is saddled with pretty dismal memory timings. As you can see in our test bed chart, SPD timings are 6-6-6-15 at DDR3-800, 7-7-7-20 at DDR3-1066 and 9-9-9-25 at DDR3-1333. "

http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.aspx?i=2989&p=8

Good DDR2 beats that & at considerably less cost.

Again, everybody agrees that once DDR3 improves in speed & timings that it will perform better than DDR2 but that isn't now (heck, you can't even buy DDR3 atm) or in the short term.

Actually you CAN buy DDR3, and you can just raise the V's a little higher and just like that... you can suddenly use lower latencies!

I don't understand what the heck the brands are waiting for, perhaps even better chips that can do 1,333MHz - 1,600MHz + good latencies with just 1.7v? that's stupid!

Just raise the freakin already, it's not that hard. :nono:

The whole idea is to try and lower power consumption but yet get faster speeds out of it.

But the fact is the current chips just can't deliver.

So you get crappy performances, but hey it has minimal consumption. :stickpoke :awhip:
