I dont know how recent this news is but Intel have been working in conjunction with the MoD on the topic of semi-conductors. As semiconductor companies have tried to squeeze extra performance out of silicone based chips, problems such a high power consumption and excessive heat emission have been encountered. Intel have released a protoype of a new transistor that uses indium antimonide. Intel claim that this new product runs significantly cooler and faster than similar componants using current technology.

The technology was originally produced as part of a project for the Ministry of Defence by the company QinetiQ (the comercial spin-off of a goverment research agency). This new technology allows the transistors to work at far lower voltages, run cooler and switch faster. Infact research done on these transistors show that they use ten times less power than todays equivelant and run 3 times faster at the same voltages.

AMD better catch on quick
