intel system

Older BIOSes don't recognize newer drives. Some only recognize ~32gigs meaning you'll need to jump the limited capacity lead on the back of the drive. If you want to use all of your drive then you need a ata controller card.

First things first, you haven't mentioned that the hard disk is actually brand new... is it?? (if you have, its an oversight on my behalf)

If its one thats been kicking around for a while, it could be screwed..... you'd be surprised what sitting in a box of bits can do to any exposed PCB on your HDD, only needs a scratch here or there, and the thing may as well be used to assault someone with it :p

Also, this is a common mistake if its IDE, that its not been forced on the wrong way round.... there should be a red line down one side of the IDE cable, I believe it needs to positioned so that the red line is on the right of the cable.... harder to do with a HDD than a floppy disk drive cos of the position of the pins, but I've seen it done never the less

The HDD is one i use ..the one i use wiv xp on my system i am typing to u on ..and it wont find it plus i use a 2gb hdd for music storage and it wont find that either it wont even find a 512mb HDD ..so no its not new and the ide cable is in the write way

as fragtek said.....

you need to find out if it is found by the operating system cd.

go into BIOS, set first boot device as CD-ROM. although, chance are that a system that old cannot boot from CD.

therefore you will need floppy disks to install xp from.

these are available from the microsoft website. 6 of them i believe.

Or u could just haul it to your local recyclying center and maybe they'll give u 50 cents for it :)

Or you could fashion it into a geeky, wobbly placemat...... :p

It sounds like your mobo is knackered in someway, I agree with bloodthirst, its caput :(

When it worked before using the older IDE and now won't, it points seriously to some static or damaged mobo PCB, those darn capacitors are easy to bend or damage......

no i will just change the board i have a Intel Celeron 533 and mobo to build

Hi

It may not be as strait forward as that, It has been a long time since I have been under the hood of a Gateway2000 series computer, but I have a feeling that the case and motherboard are not standard, and a form factor ATX board may not fit in this case, as I said I may be wrong here and a more knowledgable person may put me right on this one.

About your problem, there are many reasons why a hard drive may not be seen by your BIOS, most have been discussed here, I would suggest that maybe the Hard Drive Controller is 'kaput' (thanks W C Annihilus). A quick and cheap solution would be to buy a PCI ATA controller card. thers will support large drives and may be your answer.

Anyway good luck with this

and let us know how you get on

regards

succuba
