i bet you can't wait, i can't wait till i start my desk build...

i'm not sure about the dimmer as it don't say how much it can handle, also look like it's from the 1960's :P

yer i bet mate. ill keep and eye out for the build thread ;)

haha i was planing on it setting it and just hiding it up so it would not been seen, is stuff from the 1960's not ? i could make a new box for them or try and get some different resistors i guess

might be a better option

oh i'm not doing a build thread mate. I very rarely do build logs.
my last one i did

a mini log in a build log??!! sounds good :D

had the led dimmer switch turn up this morning

when fitted it makes a good amount of difference

think thats about the right sort of brightness

Well finally had the white plastic turn up today after 10 days of waiting and im also not that impressed with it to be fair. The piece on the right hand side looks like when they came to cut it they could not find the saw so they chewed it off instead. Lucky because it’s the bottom edge I can just fill it with white tiger seal when I finally fix it in place as at the moment its just got a few dots of hot glue.

Got the plastic cut and in place

Not much left to do now as far as building goes, although there is going to be some paint prep and loads of flatting primer, paint and polishing

1: - First thing I need to do is get my wardrobe made so I can get the end piece of the desk made and fitted

Been thinking about adding some shelves to the side of the wardrobe to give a little extra storage space for displaying some stuff

both the desk extension/in fill piece will become a cupboard
2: - prep everything for paint
3: - prime everything and flat back
4: - cover the lower part of pc area
5: - make the cover piece for the radiator section and cut out the mounts
6: - need to make or buy some trim to finish off the edge of desk that fits against the wall
7: - need to find some handles for the cupboards

And apart from updating the hardware I cannot think of any other jobs to do but I’m sure I’ll find the odd one here and there but hoping for no other big jobs

it's coming along nicely mate :)

Lookin pretty cool!

Thanks guys looking forward to having it done now :)

also came across the back plate for the graphics card today and although it wont be used in this or at least for very long anyway i felt the need to sort out the finish on it. although the black was ok im not a great fan of mat black and i never liked the fact the machine marks were left in it so i showed it some 320 grit paper which failed at taking the machine marks out, so i was left with no choice but to use some 280 grit on it.

it then ended up like this after

2nd stage with 320 grit

at this stage the plan was to paint the main part of it black and then the out line of the text plus the inside of the EK logo white to match the black and white theme but since then i had the idea of trying to get it nickel plated as a bit of a test to see how it comes out, the text outline and inside of the Ek logo will go black if i can get it nickel plate

seeing as i had the bright idea of having it plated i now need to polish it up to get a good enough finish on it to have it plated, i have sent off a few emails for quotes and turn around times so we will see what happens.

quick go at it with the first stage polishing compound to see what the damage was marks wise and its pretty good so with any luck should have it finished in a day or two depending on how much time i get to spend on it.

just a quick go so id not do the whole thing and the bit i did do is not great but it gave me a good idea of the marks still left to sand out. also the bolts that hold the back plate to card will also stay black

i may also depending on price see if i can get this done to save painting it

Going to apologise now for the number photos, I got a little carried away

Well set out to finish the back plate off today and although it’s taken from 8am to get it done I think it was worth the time to get it right. I’ve also had an email back from the plating company but I won’t give away price yet as I’d like to see what it looks likes finished first and also get your options as to whether it’s worth getting it done or if it looks alright polished.

Well what it looked like after the final stage with 1000 grit sandpaper

Just finished the first stage compound

Half way throw the second stage compound

I spent a while trying to work out what the two round marks where on it in the photo. Turns out it’s the down lighters lol. Guess that’s what you get after a few hours sleep
And quick photo of it outside halfway throw the second compound

Second stage complete

Third stage complete

Car shot to see how straight the lines were

Fifth stage complete

And OC3D forum reflection shot

Final on its own

Polished aluminium with nickel plated water block

I like the look of it now its polished but it does not really match the nickel very well.

So the question is keep it polished aluminium or get it nickel plated to match the water blocks?

Your keyboard badly needs cleaning!! Lol

yer it dose but i keep using the desk to cut wood and plastic on and other stuff. i need to replace the keyboard as soon as this is done.

ive seen worse keyboards and had to try and use some lol. im sure im the person that cleans the keyboard at work as every time i go to use it its always full of filler dust (to the point where you can not push the keys down)

well been a while since ive had chance to do much to the desk but i got a little time this afternoon to start making the in fill piece that will fill the gap between the desk and wardrobe and also tidy the end up.

there will be two shelves above the desk area to display item and i may even use led's on the underside to light them up at night

tomorrows plan is to finish it off, just two shelves and the top piece left to do. then the next big job is prep for paint

I would keep the backplates as they are right now. It won't be such a great difference when you have it completely build.

yer i like polished aluminium. have to see how it looks when its done and they are side by side.

man to get the shelves cut and fixed in

also had a quick test with some lighting to light the shelves up
this is the led strip placed in the center of the shelf

this is the led strip pretty much level with the front edge of the shelf

im not sure the led strips really work to be fair. next thing to do is to try and cap the curved end of the desk and the its pretty much ready for primer apart from a few bits of filler work on the damaged edges
