In need of a new gaming PC/3d workstation

Ive been thinking about building a new PC for a little while, unfortunately my GPU in my current machine seems to have had it so I am now looking to upgrade sooner than I had planned.

For my original budget I was thinking about £1500. For now I only have about £1000 to spend but I'm guessing thats not going to cover the spec I want...

My existing case is a CM Storm Trooper which I was hoping to replace but for now I cant afford to. Would still be interested to hear opinions on anything better thats available these days however.

My PSU is a Corsair HX750, wondering if that will still be good enough for a new system?

For the new system I'm thinking a core i7-6700, Geforce GTX1070, no idea about the motherboard... I want 64 gigs of ram but a single stick of 16 would do me fine till I can afford to add more.

I am ok for storage at present, I currently use all 8 sata ports on my mobo so I would like to have more than that on the new mobo if thats even possible!

Never tried overclocking but was thinking I might get one of those corsair water coolers for the CPU as I would like my machine a little quieter than the one I have at present.

Really appreciate any advice you guys have, sorry for the long post.

I don't know the status of your PSU. Obviously there are things like capacitor aging and so on. A good way to test it is to take it apart and look at the caps and see if they have bulged any. If not then get yourself a cheap multimeter and take some voltage measurements with it running to see if they are true to original spec. If it passes the health test (and a ruddy good clean) there's no reason to replace it really.

You don't want a single stick of ram as it will limit the memory bus to single lane, not a good idea. You want at least two.

What CPU etc do you have now? it will help if you can list it all.
 
Thanks for the reply :). I made a mistake, my PSU is actually 850 watt :rolleyes:

Current CPU - Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz with a noctua DH14 fitted
GPU - GTX 580
motherboard - Asus P8Z68
RAM - Corsair 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz Vengeance "low Profile" Memory Kit CL9 1.5V
I have 7 (actually 6 as one just went kaput) HDs two of which are SSDs and a blu ray drive.
4x 120mm case fans
 
Get a midrange board X99 board for 2011-v3 CPUs.
Or if you want, look for used/second hand 2011 CPUS and save a little and get more to spend on the GPU or another HDD since another died

If you keep your case, storage media, psu and cpu cooler you can do 1000pounds However that will be an rx480 in there not a 1070, do you need the nvidia acceleration stuff, then you could get a 980 from ocuk as they are doing a little clearance sale

Why 64gb RAM? If it's just for gaming, 16gb is bordeline, 32gb is plenty, and 64gb is overkill.

And as for the motherboard, I would personally steer well clear of ASRock. There's an MSI X99 Raider board for similar money.

So, going for 32GB RAM and swapping the mobo out gives you a build budget of £1,069.

The 64gigs of RAM is for the likes of mudbox and zbrush which eat it up very quick. I would be quite happy with 32 gigs for now though, maybe I can put some more money into one of the other components and add some more RAM in a couple of months.

Having thought about it some more I can stretch my budget 1400 quid if needs be. I'm wondering if a rad for the CPU would make much difference in terms of noise over my Noctua?

What do you have against ASrock Davva? I've never used them myself.

Also, I am a little confused about the 4 x 16GB gskill kit, if youre installing them all together shouldnt they run in quad channel mode? But on the gskill site they're listed as dual channel...

Yes because they are a kit of 4 dimms. If you want quad channel on the X99 platform that would mean you have to populate all 8 dimm slots

No, as long as you have 4 DIMMS total it will run in quad channel. 8 Dimms just means it's quad channel, but just more dimms.

Get the 4x16GB kit if it's cheaper. If it's not then the 8x8GB kit will do just fine, but no room for expansion later on if that is a concern for you at all
