ihs removal still the thing to do?

Not really dude no, its an absolute pita and you have a pretty good chance of killing the cpu if you do. Deffo not something I have or would try tbh.

I agree, don't bother, the CPUs are cool enough as it is anyway as long as you have a half decent cooler.

Is it bad that I'm not even old enough to ever have done this!? Don't mean to make you feel old or anything :p

I used to do it on my old AMD chips a good few years ago and saw some good results. It's up to you really... but bare in mind one wrong move and that's that, dead CPU. ;)

IHS = Integrated Heat Spreader, its basicly the big block of metal that sits ontop of your cpu's die to draw and pass heat to a heatsink. By removing the IHS you can improve your cooling by a fair amount because it gets rid of the middle man but is risky as you can also damage your die making your cpu a nifty paper weight.

Back in the days where big arse tower air coolers were rare, and wc'ing was even rarer. Oc'ing was more tricky than 3 simple changes in the bios, the thinning or even removal of the ihs to give either a better surface or a direct contact was a good way to shave 5-10 degrees... Usually made a difference in being able to clock ur cpu to 2.4 or 2.7ghz

.. these days ? U can keep ur ihs as-is, keep ur warranty intact, and get a really good cooler. Wc or air. And most new cpus do 3.8-4.2g without crying.

I would say tho, if u had a disposable AMD K7 mobo and cpu, u could give it a go. Even an old Pentium 4 setup. If u don't care if the thing breaks, it'd be an interesting venture.
