From what I understand, the deformities were a byproduct of his new found healing skills. He had to be put under intense torture to activate them. The side effect was that his skin turned out like it did

This has been my life since my 7 year old got into Spiderman at age 2, he has every film and cartoon including the 1960's original ones and I have had the joys of watching them all several times
