i7 Extreme 4820K & MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) ?

Hello gents just a quick question regarding the above hardware..

I currently have in my main rig an Asus Formula Z and AMD FX8350 OCd to 5.0ghz using a custom Water cooling loop. I have however an opportunity to purchase new the above X79 hardware at an extremely reasonable price (cheaper than a 4770k and Z87 mobo). My questions are the following..

1. Is the 4820k a decent CPU for Heavy gaming, photoshop and video editing ?
2. Will i see any kind of a performance boost over my current set up ?
3. Is the above mentioned combination a good match, for overclocking(taking into account that it will also be custom water cooled)?
4. If i combine the above X79 hardware with my GTX780, will my XFX PRO 1000w PSU surfice, even with overclocking?

In case needed i intend to use my existing G Skill Ripjaws Z 16GB DDR3 PC17000 2133MHz.

I thank you in advance for your Time and Knowledge.

1: Performance wise it'll perform about the same, if not slightly less than a 4770k. The x79 platform will have many benefits though.
2: Not really in gaming, but especially in rendering times as Intel cores are more powerful than AMD ones.
3: Depends how far you want to overclock. It's still a pretty low-end (for x79 that is) board.
4: That's mooooooooore than plenty. Enough to toss in another 780 if you like.

I thank you for your quick response, so will i see a big performance hit with this over a 4770k set up taking into account that this set up is costing me £50 less than an equivalent 4770k set up.

Is the GD65 a bad X79 board

Not at all, they'll perform similarly I guess. For numbercrunching definitely get the 4820k though. Those CPUs are made for that.

I don't know that much about X79 boards so someone else is going to have to answer that one, sorry :)

Paddie: you mentioned video editing. Assuming you're encoding / compressing video, the X79 will serve you much better than your current setup. Err, I think, since I'm really not hip to AMD CPUs. :) The x79's quad channel memory bandwidth will give you a boost with that stuff, not so much for gaming.

The GD65 is the top of msi's motherboard range and I've had mine for about a year and its been perfect for me, sad to be selling it now but had an itch to upgrade.

Thanks Tom, think im gonna go with these instead..

As it will mean i can integrate the Waterblock into my custom Water cooling plus i love the look of the armour.

OK just had a horrible thought can anyone tell me if my XFX PRO1000w Platinum PSU will be compatible with the Haswell low power state thingy?

Not really no mate, you still dont need it and the 4920 is basically a 3770k.

Id still get haswell
Even if you were video encoding Guv? I was under the impression that the quad-channel memory would actually be of some benefit there. Minor yes, but still a bit speedier than Haswell.

Might be splitting hairs though, since either path is a leap over the AMD.
