i7 7820X Overclocking

Hey, so I have a 7820X on the way to go in my recently acquired MSI x299 carbon.
I'm going to be using this thread for my OC profiles, temps, benchmarks and all that good stuff.

I have the EK monoblock for the board so I'm hoping that will prevent the VRM throttling that debauer demonstrated.

Even though i'm only on water, I still want to get a new validation to replace the measly 5.25 in my signature and break in to HWbot top 10 for this CPU in overall frequency, SuperPi and Cinebench.

I'd also like to encourage anyone else working with this chip to share their numbers and temps! I'm always curious as to what 'real world' users are getting. (i.e people that can't just skype debaurer for tips ;))

Well, wish me luck with this little OC adventure. Chip arrives on Friday, so if all goes according to plan I'll have some base numbers ready to share the following day.

Thanks!
~~ Lucy.

Ouch... burn much... Shots fired  Jokes.

Looking forward to see what you and others can achieve here.

We'll have to see! If I can push it as much as my SB-E 3820 i'll be over the moon. 8 cores at 5Ghz+ is going to be a huge amount of performance for what the chip cost me.

Also, can an admin please move this to the CPU sub forum? An i7 7820X isn't a GPU.. I was tired

Done.

Also, I've merged your posts, we don't allow consecutive posting and prefer people to use the edit button, with the exception of build logs of course :)

Thank you! And thanks for the heads up, makes sense, keeps it easier to follow :)

just ask his mate 8 Pack instead.:p:)

If you are getting your CPU via debauer you could be looking at 4.9ghz or more on the overclocking.:)

Haha yup! The chip didn't come from Debauer, no idea where it originally came from. All I know is its been delided, resealed post checked and boxed back up.

Just had a look to see what people are getting on the OcUK benching threads with 7820X CPUs and they look good for 4.7 or 4.8

If you get one that goes well it will be more silicone lottery than anything else

Go careful raging the volts even if it has been delidded. You really need a rampage or an Apex to get the best from it though. MSI BIOS will more than likely hold you back (without you realising)

Does the MSI bios just have lower limits in some way than the Rampage and Apex? Or the board just generally less stable due to not quite as beefy VRMs?

Only 5Ghz+ OCs I've done before have been done on a Rampage or Crosshair, so maybe i've just spoilt myself and i'm holding expectations too high.. CPU will be with me tomorrow anyway, so I'll just have to wait and see!

As Tom says Rampage VI Extreme has better cooling for the power delivery.

I use the board above with a 8 Pack 7980XE binned 7980XE and can OC to 4.9ghz.

If I was using a normal board I would be looking at 4.6

These multi core intel CPUs can use a lot of power and things get toasty when OCing.

I'm going to be using an EK monoblock so hopefully that will help? Just have to wait and see!

So, my CPU arrived and all is good. Its an engineering sample though which I wasn't expecting.

Weird. How much did you pay for it?

BTW I was doing some studying on ES as every PC I have has one in lol and I found out that Q means Quality. I forget what S means now but I have never had an S they have usually all been Q.

So.. is Q a good thing?

I paid £350 in total. I was about to buy a brand new 7800X but saw this and couldn't resist

Tis a good price. ES however are free lol. Intel hand them out like sweets. It's also illegal to sell them but at that price I would not complain.

Yeah, Q is the one you want. S apparently are not complete and are just beta samples. That is probably why I have never seen one.

They are, however, amazing value. I paid £360 last June for a 14/28 BE ES. It's freakin' uber. Can't OC it, but can tweak the bus to get around 2200 in CB. For the money it was a no brainer because it just dropped into my X99 board and cost less than a 1800x.

If it's illegal to sell them what do intel expect people to do with them after use? Just put them in a draw forever? or are they meant to be sent back?

I've been doing a bit of research on them, seems like a real sort of grey area. I'm not complaining though!

The NDA says they are property of Intel and you are literally borrowing it. It is a very grey area indeed, and no forum I know of (apart from possibly this one?) will allow you to list or sell them. Not that it will matter if you are going to hang onto it, of course.

But yeah, when you sign that NDA you sign a deal with the devil.
