I HATE networking

Network fucked up again. I will get a router one day! xms, your the genius who set me up, now I need help again :(

Desktop got no internet access. I changed nothing, just booted up after coming in and no net. Rebooted both computers, twiddled with IPs, pulled the plugs, no joy.

Double shit. I just noticed I can't share files now. So the network isn't working at all. Fuck, why is this stuff so gay? Both machines report they are connected to each other with no problems!

For those unfamiliar with my gayasfuck setup, ADSL modem into laptop, shared via crossover cable direct to desktop. Nowt fancy, just a 5m cable linking the two bastards together :cussing:

its either software ot the cablin u use ; do u have a router/switch??

what vis the code @ the ends of ur cables??? if it id 568A then u dont have a crossover if it is568B then u do; generally u need a crossover for an ether net to ethernet connection ensure the network adaptors are enabled on each computer

I know its a crossover cable cos its worked fine up till now. No router, just the cable between 10/100 port on laptop to 10/100 port on desktop mobo.

In the morning I shall try the other mobo port, it has an Nvidia one and a Realtek or something. I use the Nvidia, but tomorrow I'll play with the other one

nite m8 i can prob help wit this prob; ensure u r sharin the net connection tho...

Fuckin networks can be such a pain in the arse.... I've had networks die on me before too for absolutely no reason at all.

Are you using IE or FireFox? If ur using IE there's a possibility that you got a bug that's switched some of ur settings without you knowing. :foff: Microsoft!

Hi muffin I take it you were using M$ ICS to network the computers together, if so just go back into the ICS network sharing wizard and re-do the setup. Make sure that there aren't any 3rd party software firewalls to interfere with M$ SP2 firewall, if thats what you are using. If you want to use a 3rd party software firewall, I can recommend Zone Alarm. As it will configure ICS for you, making the desktop machine the gateway and your lappie the client. Although the pro version (5) has this wizard disabled, or alternatively get yourself a router m8. :)

They are what you told me to put them as originally - 169.254.0.1 laptop and 169.254.0.2 desktop...you mean those ones, or net IP?

I'm not havin fun :(

Swapped the onboard network for an old Realtek PCI card, set it up as before with no joy. Both computers say nowt wrong, but got no net or file sharing still.

The finger point to either laptop not sharing or, linking to other recent errors, the desktop mobo is dieing.

like PV said, delete all connections, go into device manager on both comps, disable the NIC, reboot, enable NIC, reboot and redo the network.

I will, I will :(

Got an 8 port network switch and a couple of patch cables in case it were the cables fault, but its changed nothing.

Another interesting note, in this things manual it says

Power

OFF - Switch is off

Blinking green - Switch is booting up

Solid green - Switch is ready

...except it dosen't go green, its orange all the time

This is the last time I listen to your advice :D

ALL I DID WAS DISABLE THE NETWORK CARD AND ITS FUCKED UP MY LIFE

Talking to you on a beautiful 640x480 res, with added 4bit colour. I can barely see what I'm typing, and I have to scroll across the page to see the word "and".

I'm gonna cry or chuck this frickin shit out the window. I try to change res and Windows bitches about "The currently selected graphics driver cannot be used. It was written for a previous version of Windows...blah blah...The system has been started with the default AGP drivers"

AND I CAN'T CHANGE ANYTHING

WANKERS

w00t! NORMAL COLOUR! but still only 800x600 res. I'm gettin there

Sorry for comments in last post, just a *teeny* bit stressed
