I HATE networking

1. taskmgr shows nothing of a DNS service, but in MSconfig I see a DNS client running

2. nothing

4. WORKS :D

4 = :cool:

Its not the proper way to do it, but it certainly wont have any negative effect on your connection. Someting on your Laptops ICS is screwy, its not providing your desktop with passthrough DNS.

Thanks once again, you solve all my network problems :worship:

So how does this other IP work? Where is it? And I'm gonna get a router one day soon

The IP i just gave you for the DNS server is the IP address of your ISP's DNS servers.

This is how ICS is supposed to work:

DHCP: Desktop(169.254.0.2)=>Laptop(169.254.0.1)=>ISP(62.241.162.200)

Gateway: Desktop(169.254.0.2)=>Laptop(169.254.0.1)=>ISP(???.???.???.???)

And this is how its working now:

DHCP: Desktop(169.254.0.2)=>ISP DNS(62.241.162.200)

Gateway: Desktop(169.254.0.2)=>Laptop(169.254.0.1)=>ISP(???.???.???.???)

So your desktop is no longer querying your laptop for DNS, its going straight to your ISP (which could be quicker - but thats speculating). The only thing your laptop is being used for now is a Gateway out to the internet.

I think so. He knows networks but he ain't psychic :rolleyes:

Yea i know it got it from ipconfig /all but it dont explain how he knew that desktop wasnt getting the dns from the lappy. Instead all he has done is told the dekstop to go straight to the ISP for the dns instead. But i want to know why all of a sudden the desktop didnt want to get the dns fro the lappy. :o
