How to know whats good for overclocking?

Hi, im not intending on buying a new motherboard, but i was wondering how much of a difference there is in mobo's for overlcocking and what sorta difference it makes, and also if different mobo's (of the same chipset etc.. for example, LGA 1155 Z77) if it makes any difference to overclocking for different mobo's what do you look for to find a good overcloking mobo etc...

What Cpu do you have? What Ghz you aiming for? What's the cooling solution? Budget?

Yes different motherboards have different capabilities.

im not saying for now, im saying if you were looking for a motherboard to do overlcocking on, does the motherboard matter like will it make it more stable or cooler, for example if you run a i5 3570k on water? or does the motherboard not make a difference?

More stable yes but cooler? Maybe 1-2 degrees if you can get a constant voltage and slightly lower on a higher end motherboard.

No crap it will run cooler on water!:p

yh the mobo definately does make a difference in OC capabilities. lots of power phases for good clean stable power delivery to the cpu is one of the more important features of a good OC board. im sure there are more things too but i dont really know much about it but im sure the guys on here will know alot more

Yeah, in a way the motherboard is probably more important than the CPU in terms of overclocking. Unless a FX-8350 is defective, itll hit 4.5. But if you've got a puny 4+1 motherboard, youre probably not going to even get that at least not without throttling under load. You gotta have a good solid and beefy motherboard that can handle the current and thermal loads properly.

ok, but is there a way by reading specs or looking at pics whether it is a good motherboard for overclocking, if so, what do i look for?

Reviews are always a great place to start. Reviewers will do some overclocking so youll get their take on how well a board OC's.

You can also look at the specs and see what it has. Like for AMD boards, if its ok for 140 watt chips, you know its going to be pretty durable. Same with power phase. 8+2 is what youre looking for. Solid caps and that sort of thing.
