How long will the 780 Ti's remain "Good" ?

So at the moment the 780 Ti is an awesome piece of powerful tech but for how long ?

By this I mean with the release of Maxwell only a few months away it's not worth investing in a 780 Ti if your shopping for a GPU as with the release of Maxwell the cards will be the same price or cheaper and out perform the 780 Ti by a good amount.

Now I'm all for advancement in technology but isn't 5-6 months kind of short for the lifespan of a top end graphics card before it gets replaced by the same company with something more powerful and cheaper ?

if you always try to stay with bleeding edge tech, you're fighting a losing battle, buy something today its superseded in 48 hours.

You should buy for your NEED not your WANT!!

Even the 780 is still a beast, ive yet to play anything which makes it crawl! the Ti will be a good card for good while!

At 1920 x 1080 it'll be "good" for quite some time, but at 2560 x 1440 you may be struggling in a year depending on the graphical fidelity of the titles at the time.

I still use SLI 580s and they're fine for me, they can't play some games on max, but they're plenty good enough for me. I'm sure SLI 780Tis would last you a long time :) Then again I know you do always like to have the latest gear ;) To be fair, once I'm out of uni and into a job I'm pretty sure I'll be the same lol.

I think the problem is that I have a lot of enthusiast friends and half of them say "The new gen will make the current gen look like a rust bucket so get it as soon as its out" and the others say "Keep hold for a few generations you will only have to turn all settings down and run lower resolutions".
I think I'll just sell up and get a PS4, Less of a massive headache ^_^

Haha I'll believe that when I see it. Maybe when Razer release a Dualshock 4 controller ;)

It's not quite as bad as that when a new gen comes out surely haha. Maybe upgrading to the best hardware every other generation is a reasonable compromise. I do understand that element of being better than your mates though, you need to keep on top of it ;)

It's not that I keep up with friends, Most have got AMD hardware 1100T's, 8150's, 5870's, 5970's or 6970's and are very happy with their setups.
It's just when ever anything new comes out I think to myself "Well it's 10% faster" which in the grand scheme of things isn't much and therefore I end up spending stupid money keeping up with myself lol.
I think I'll stop the idiotic upgrade bug BS and enjoy what I have until 2015 :)

Reminds of Apple. Releasing the same shit less than a year apart. In another way sort of like COD as well releasing yearly releases... just companies milking money.

Though in Nvidias defense, i think the 780ti may still be damn near the top. Only a card or two will top it and other cards rebranded again but with new architectural advancements.

yea, I'm also sure with some 780 ti's you be fine for a long time.
I'm still running 3x 670's in my rig, dident bother buying 700 series.
and I still run everything maxed out :)

Answer to the thread question - a long time. You'll be able to max all your games for the forseeable future, and if you can live with turning down settings a tad in the future you'd probably get nearly 5 years out of it.

To give an example, I managed nearly 4 years out of my gaming rig that I built back in 2009 with an AMD Phenom II X4 955 and a Sapphire Radeon HD 4870, I actually still use it as a secondary rig. I was able to max most of the games I was playing, it wasn't until maybe 2011 that I actually started to have to turn down the settings a small bit. For instance, my 1st playthrough of Skyrim was with the HD 4870. I had the settings dialed almost all the way to the max and I got perfectly playable frame rates, despite the whole rig being years old. :)

You can get a long time out of hardware if you can live with turning down the settings a small bit.

Well admission of a problem is the 1st stage to solving it. ^_^

A friend of mine said something that made me giggle, With CPU's you want to go for the even numbers i.e 2nd gen i7, 4th gen i7 etc...
And with GPU's you want to go for the odd numbers i.e GTX 500, 700, 900 etc... I think I'll adopt that way of thinking, Will save me some cash ^_^

Yea it's not worth playing the chasing game. As tempting as it is you'll be mostly throwing your money away. At best you'll have about half a year before your tech stops being the fastest but that assumes that you will be the buying the latest card at release which is just bad news all the way around.

You pay a crazy premium for buying on release dates, plus you'll be using the earliest drivers and you should be really waiting until the partner companies bring out their own models with 3rd party coolers and factory overclocks etc. Look at the r9 200 series releases - NDAs lifted in October and we are only just seeing the 3rd party releases of the r9 290x now (and the reference design is not at all worth it unless you are watercooling!).

There's always something just around the corner - a release from the other manufacturer, or a dual GPU card release from somewhere which means that you are always better off waiting for the deals a few months down the line and get a better designed card with mature drivers.

And anyway - very few people can tell the difference between maxed out graphics and having AA turned down a notch whilst actually in game. Best to hold on and get a deal :D
