How do i use my TV as a monitor?

EDIT: Go here... http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?p=642913#post642913

Hello. Can someone please explain how to use the HDMI out on my 6870 to play games (with HDMI audio) on my TV? When i connect the TV, the TV shows a black screen and the main display goes blue. When i disconnect the TV my main display returns to how it should be.

I only want to use the TV for playing games.

Any help is appreciated,
Chris.

Nah it's nothing like that man.
Whats annoying is i can't even play with any settings once both displays are connected, as one just goes blue and the other is black.

Can i not just choose a primary, then choose whether the second extends or mirrors? Obviously each with their own resolution and frequency ect.

I'm not familiar with Windows at all really :S

have you downloaded the latest set of drivers from AMD?

You will then be able to open up catalyst control center and select what you want from there.

Hello Master&Puppet. I have the latest drivers but i can't make any sense of the catalyst center. Besides, when both displays are connected i have no way of seeing anything as one is black and one is blue. I'm sure this should be simple to do but i'm not having any luck.

Yesterday i managed to get a crappy resolution on my TV and a really crappy resolution on my primary display, which is the best i've gotten so far. I must have changed some of the wrong settings and now i don't appear to be able to go back.

Is there a way of setting the catalyst center to completely default and starting over?

Chris.

Are the monitor and TV the same resolution/refresh rate?
If you press Win Key + P and select projector only does your tv show your desktop?

I am not sure if this will work but it may be worth a try.

Get the model number of the tv and find the resolution and refresh rate it runs at. Then set your primary display to those settings before connecting the tv. Then connect the tv. I had a similar issue with my old pc where when I connected the tv via hdmi it would make both screen go black and the tv would say cannot display resolution or something. Then when the tv works setup both displays separately in the catalyst panel.

If that works then to get your audio working you may need to change some settings. I know for Nvidia you go to the control panel and just set up hdmi audio and it works so maybe AMD is the same. I have little to no AMD experience so cant help there sorry.

If you are running pc speakers or headphones at the same time to save you having to unplug them everytime you plug in your tv to get the tv sound to work you need to go to the Playback tab in the sound manager. Then search for your tv and make that the primary audio playback device. This means that when the tv is plugged in windows plays the sound through the tv but when it is plugged out it will play through your speakers/headphones as they are the next primary device.

Whey! Windows key + P allows me to get my primary display back whilst the TV is still connected. Looks like thing are going in the right direction now. Thanks :)

The TV is actually a TV via an amp (PC>Amp>TV). I'm not sure if that makes any difference? I know it doesn't in other OS's.

Thanks for telling me about the audio, that probably would have been the next question after i get video working.

I'm going to try and get the TV working as a display like you suggested and go from there.

Cheers,
Chris.

Errrrrm... Its an LG 60PG7000.

It looks as though the Catalyst thing has it detected right...

However the Catalyst thing sees the Amp and not the TV. This is normal, OS X does the same.

I done it!!!!!!! haha

Turns out i needed to set the TV to HDMI > 1080P rather than 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. I didn't even see this section in the catalyst software, i was playing with resolutions elsewhere :s

Never mind, sorted.

Gonna play with audio now.

1080i wasn't an option man. It showed all of the normal PC display resolutions, and at the very end it had "HDMI 1080P".

Like i said, all sorted now. Even got sound working :P

Thanks.

Ok guys I have done a fresh install and I am having trouble setting up my TV again.

This time I'm on Windows 8.
Can someone please give me a quick tutorial on how to set up my displays like this...

Monitor - 1920 x 1080
TV - 1080i @ 30Hz

I would like them to show the same picture, ie, mirror/duplicate.

At the moment BOTH display are working, but my TV is acting like a second desktop instead of showing the same picture as my monitor.

Can anyone help? I wanna play Crysis 3 :/ haha

No look with that mate, I already tried it and it changes the resolution. I want to duplicate but keep the native resolutions and frequencies.

it changes the resolution.
To what resolution does it change?
I want to duplicate but keep the native resolutions and frequencies.
The problem is that your monitor might not support 30hz, check your manual for supported frequencies or in your video control panel you should have a section where to set custom resolutions, and you can try there to set it to 30hz and see if it runs.
I know mine doesn't want to run at 30hz.

Hello.
After playing some more the best i can get is both screens working with one having a crappy picture. I guess i will have to live with this.

Why not use extended mode then, so you can leave the screens at their native resolution/hz and you can use one of them as a second monitor?
