If i hosted a server using Linux would it cause less lag? Right now i can run 8 players at 33tick without major lag on Windows. Would switching over to Linux be better since it uses less RAM and CPU? What version of Linux would be best for a CS:S server?

Not really. It might be more stable, but in my experience setting up a CSS server on Linux is a real PITA. It's not so much the install, but Linux has an internal Kernel ticrate that affects things like game servers and will limit the in/out of the CSS server if it's not configured correctly.

setting it up on linux is a pain, stick with windows, but shutdown/stop all services that are unneeded/unused.

dont forget XP is very limited on concurrent connections. Best to run it on a server based os.

Thats if your using Xp that is.
