Home made NAS or WD MyCloud?

So my mum has given in and finally agreed that she needs somewhere to save all of her photos and data to as a backup as all of her data is currently on a single drive.

Basically I was wondering which would be better for the use case of simple things like storing photos and allowing them to be brought up via the network to much more intensive things like playing a game of the drive in the NAS.

I have about £150 to play with so these were the solutions I came up with...

or this

If I go with the home NAS then I need atleast 4 sata ports for the drives that we currently have (about 2.5TB across all of them) but I have selected a board with 6 for upgradabilities sake.

i would say go with the first one as u say the motherboard has 6 sata ports so you can add more drives later and just install win 7 or win 8 and setup file sharing it is much easier to do

as for the wd 2tb cloud nas from amazon i was looking it up thare are lots of problems with it so i would avod it

Thanks for the reply man, I'll go with the first one and put windows 7 on it and just treat the drives as 2 drives for me and 2 for my parents (works out about 1.5TB for me and 1TB for them :)). Will I be able to put games onto one of the drives and use it to play from or will it have serious problems running games? I have the drives in my rig atm and they play fine so was just wondering if because it has to send the data over gigabit ethernet that it would make the games run considerably slower or more unreliably?

dont now about loading the games from the server but probably best to run the games directly from your gaming computer

Yea I definitely will with my favorite games but for the ones that I don't play too much I don't want to really have them clogging up my SSD as that's what I'm hoping to achieve, a SSD only rig. I will try it with another rig and see if its a viable option :).
