Help with picking a CPU

Hi all,

New to the forum but love the OC3D vids. I need some advice!

I am looking for a new CPU and Motherboard. It will be for mainly gaming but some streaming. I will also be using my 2 1080Ti's as well as a Samsung 960 Pro m.2 drive.

I've been trying to narrow it down and I think I am down to the 7820X on a MSI Gaming Pro Carbon and the 8700K on the same board but for the Z370 chip.

I know the i7-8700K is faster core speed, but has less cores, less PCI lanes and not quad channel ram.

Budget wise I am kinda at my max with the 7820x and board (£510 cpu & £280 motherboard).

I just can't decide.

Thanks

And have you considered an 8 core AMD with the Pro Carbon? as it will game and stream as well and save you a bit of money at the same time.

I have thought about the Ryzen. It just doesn't seem to cut it with the Intel stuff. I wish it did as i love the idea of Ryzen.

Doesn't cut it in what way? Don't be mislead by silly 1080p gaming benchmarks. If you're like me, you aren't using a pair of 1080TIs to game at 1080p. Once you go up to 1440p +, the difference shrinks. And if you get good RAM, and don't mind learning how to fiddle with timings, it really kicks arse. Once you get the RAM running at higher speeds, a lower clocked Ryzen can hang with an OCed 7700k, especially at higher resolutions.

Food for thought.

Are you playing at more than 1080P? If your just gaming and streaming, 6 cores is plenty. Your not going to notice much difference between the two doing that. If your over 1080P, your not going to tell the difference between Ryzen and Intel in except a rare one or two games. Everything else is almost identical, except for the money left in your pocket.

Well if you like having a tinker the 1700 is the way to go, if like me you don't really want to tinker just drop the volts, then go get the 1700x and put the money you save towards better GPU or HDD or whatever

1700 FTW! But the most important consideration with Ryzen is selecting good memory. Gotta get Samsung B-die for best results, preferably the lowest timings / highest speed combo you can get. 3200 CL14 at a minimum IMO (I went 3600 CL15, but it cost me). DDR4 prices are insane these days too, for any platform!

Valid point about the ram too!

Currently I got a 5820k so I want something that will be an upgrade from that. My concern is with Ryzen it takes a lot of tinkering to get it to run well (from what I've seen anyway) and still it's not quite up with the Intel stuff. I'm not a fan boi of either I've just got my budget and want the best bang for my buck.

Is the 5820k overclocked? Otherwise that would be the first step.
You don't really need a new CPU, there is plenty of punch in the current on :)

The best option would be a second machine for capturing the gameplay and streaming it.
(Don't know how that works :) Just that is the best option)

Yea it's mildly overclocked to 4.5 but the reason I need a new one is my misses needs an upgrade and so I thought I'd get a new one and she can have my old one.

Arr okay. The idea of 2 machines is that even a 10 core CPU will see a FPS hit when streaming.
I it were me, i would go Intel. Ryzen is an awesome option when on a budget.
The main question is, how much of a streamer are you? :D
The 8700K would be more than a enough for gaming, and som light streaming. But streaming 10 hours a day, i would pick something with more cores.

I suppose the thing is if Ryzen was only 1 or 2% behind the two Intel's I was looking at and offered a good saving I'd be tempted as I'd then look at upgrading the misses gfx card from the 1050ti to a 1070.

I am kinda confused here. I might have missed something, but has any one asked if you are using all of your cores now and why you want an 8 core CPU? is it just because you feel like it's a natural upgrade from what you have now?

I don't know if you have seen my posts on other "what should I buy?" threads but I mention incremental and monumental. IE - don't buy two cores at a time that works out expensive. Either eat MacDonald's hamburgers (Zx70) and upgrade every year, or, go for something that is a true upgrade.

Yes, the 1700 and 1700x are upgrades to the 5820k. But, later 5820ks were good clockers (mine did 4.5) and thus you gain some and you lose some. Yes, when "coring out" the 1700 and X will be faster in Cinebench etc but you need to be using those cores. If you are not using those cores? stick with what you have now. If you are using those cores? go Threadripper 12 core or Intel 10 core. Otherwise hold on for a bit longer and then do that.

AM4 will only get 8 cores IMO. So the upgrade path is there (because newer Ryzens should clock higher etc) but nothing monumental. If all of a sudden game devs make games use as many cores as you can throw then you may find it getting left behind somewhat.

Which all comes back to monumental vs incremental. It doesn't sound to me like you are short of money so I would always go monumental.
