Right just got around to installing the competition board i won from OC3D.

Specs:

I7 860

Corsair 1000w HX

ati 5970

2X4GB 1600mhz ripjaw memory

Maximus III Extreme motherboard

Turned the system on just an hour ago and left it to install win 7.

Came back to it 10 minutes ago only to see a black cloud coming out the top exaust of my case. Opened it up only to see part of the board on fire? everything was installed 100% correctly...no contacting metals etc.

sorry for the terrible picture! the chip which took the damage is located on the top right of the board just next to the memory.

Your gunna have to get a better picture dude, cos from that pic it looks like the heat has risen from the outside IN to the board not the other way, Deffo try and get a better picture, Ive never seen a motherboard do that.

hmm I think I can see what's happened. Looks like one of the copper traces has burned out. If you look you can see the exposed copper and it's broken. Looks like the resin coating that covers it has burnt off, hence the smoke.

Probably a short circuit somewhere.

See pic. I've traced the cause of death in green

Ive PM'd you ghosty but the way of the land is that no prizes have warranty. Ill see what I can do when they are back from holiday but your best hope is an RMA if I can get one arranged. I cant promise anything though dude.

If a board dies due to a VRM/Cap etc then it'll smoke some, but it won't usually damage anything else. Well, unless they are caught in the flames

Thankfully the voltages to the other components come from the power supply. So it's when a PSU goes that you need to worry. Most good ones have protection circuitry any way, so as soon as they detect a problem they just shut off.

Years ago every manu was dealt some buggered caps by the suppliers in Japan. This led to them either leaking or exploding (they bang friggin awesome

) but of all the horror stories I read none of them contained any damage to anything else.

My Shuttle Nforce 2 had to be checked over, but I was one of the lucky ones haha.

wounding mate, seems as tho you have some kick ass stuff aswell,i amsure it will be sorted out accordingly fella
