Right today i built a mid range rig for a buddy.

Installed everything turned it on.. everything seems to be working fine.. install vista still seems to be working.

Problem is when i restart the rig having installed the graphics card drivers.. it just hangs before the log on screen, i tried leaving it for ages just stays. The card is 9800gt, ive tried loadsssss of different drivers and the same problem comes from everything.

Just wondered if anyone has any ideas? im trying another set of drivers now.. lets see.

To clarify the pc starts up into vista when no drivers are installed, then once the graphics drivers are installed it just hangs before the logo appears.

Be sure u have powered the card (easily forgotten in a rush). Also some psus dont adequately power the gfxcard through it's dedicated pcie plug, u sometimes need to use a dual molex to pcie adaptor supplied with the gfxcard.

Boot into safemode, uninstall the drivers, then reinstall em.

To check if it actually hangs the pc or just doesnt display anything - w8 for it to settle down after powering up and press capslock or numlock. If the pc is still running the lights will light on the keyboard.

I tried a 9500gt the other day, had exactly the same problems. In the end I had to send the card back :(

The lights on the keyboard are off, they flash during the loading screen then dont come back on.

Its really confusing.. Ive booted into safe mode and uninstalled the drivers over and over.. The PHYSX drivers work just not the graphics ones. :S

The psu is a corsair 550w and the mobo is an abit IP-43.

Im going to try the card in my PC if a BIOS flash, then replacement, dosent work.

Hmm, that sounds just like what I had, could sort them all in safe mode, but booting normally it just skrewed up.

Mine got half way through booting, froze, then went to the BSOD...

I dont think the card is faulty.. Though the fan seems to be running at 100% all the time.. it just dosent slow down lol.

All the temps seem fine. I might try swapping the 6-pin plugs around.

Mine wasnt faulty AFAIK, are you on vista X64?

Ill see If Jim got the card working, and then ill know if it was faulty :P

haha, its 32-bit which makes it all the more confusing.. The bios update didnt work, still does the same thing. All the chipset drivers are installed.

I think its time to have a fiddle around.

I kind of had a similar problem, whenever a USB device was present whilst booting up. The POST screen would hang and not even the logo would finish. I updated the BIOS and everything was fine, maybe try that.

Try the MOBO's forum on their official site, the help thats given is normally by professionals and employee's of ABIT or ASUS (2 main sites).

Hmm turned out being a faulty card. I put it in my pc and it just spun the fan at 100% and would only output simple resolutions and wouldnt let me install drivers. It just wouldnt recognise it as a 9800GT and when it tried to, the rig would hang.

okay it wasnt a faulty card. it works in my pc now, im so confused i rang scan and they told me to reinstall windows and swap memory around which i have, to no avail.

It really has me stumped..
