Help please! EEC/REG fail imminent.

Hello.

This is my first post here after a long time of watching TTL on Youtube. I am in some need of help.

My boyfriends brother just bought a new pc in parts and I've been helping them put it together. There has been a lot of trouble with the parts and the guy who ordered it got it all wrong. After a lot of returning and delivering of parts they finally got it right. Or so they thought. Nothing worked. After a while, as the proud boys they were they asked the girl for help. In the spur of the moment before we figured out what was wrong with it all we had managed to order a new MOBO because we figured it was with the Gigabyte MOBO the problem was(we thought it was defect). This time a ASUS SABERTOOTH X58. Finally I figured out that they actually had bought some Crucial DDR3 1333MHz 4GB REG/ECC RAM for a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R. This did not work, I wonder why.

Everything else works fine. We have tested both the PSU, the Graphics Card and the processor on another computer so we were almost sure it was the MOBO since we read alot about other people with the same problem with the Gigabyte. It boots, it just wont POST.

So now we have two motherboards and some EEC/REG ram and I really dont know what to do. Is this going to work? Is there something we can do to make it work? Because they live quite far away from everything and the mail order pc store is quite slow.

So to sum up.

Can you use EEC/REG RAM on the Gigabyte or the Asus Sabertooth? Or should we just order some "proper" RAM for the job and deliver the Sabertooth or the Gigabyte before it's too late? And which of the boards should we stick with in the end?

Hoping for some good suggestions!

inb4 noobs and all that. We are pretty much first time builders with too much enthusiasm and spirits.

Thanks!

best way to find out is visit the ASUS website and check the qualified vendor list. It is a long list of RAM that is compatible with board. I have a sabertooth in my rig and it is a very nice board and usually easy to work with.

You said the board comes on, but does not POST correct? On the board are four(4) LED lights that come on for self checks. Order should be CPU>RAM>VGA>Boot. Do any of these lights come on? Do they stay lit?

How much RAM do you have, and how many modules?

After looking up the RAM you say that you have, I was unable to find it on the QVL so that would be my guess on what is wrong, not positive though.

no you'll need to get normal ram . ecc/reg ram is for specific mobos that call 4 it like server boards and such

ShortAlien - yeah thats right. The pc boots.. Then turns itself off again, and boots again. Very strange. We get no image on the screen (we also tried using different GPUs). The board has some lights on thats correct, but these are on even if the RAM is in or not. Thanks for an answer btw. We have 8GB of those Crucial RAM right now.

Hi again. We decided to just go ahead and buy some RAM that would work. Now the computer is working fine, except for the Gigabyte card trying to mess with our heads a bit. Turning itself off and on at its own will a few times before booting properly and so on.. But when we first get into Windows everything works perfectly. Thanks guys!

yup glad ya got it sorted out I was pretty sure it was the ecc ram not working as that mobo doesnt take ecc ram

Noticed 8gb of ram.The x58 need 3x1,3x2 or 3x4gb ddr3 trippelchannel ramsticks. If using 2x2gb or 3x2gb ddr3 doublechannel rams you wont have the full x58 potential at your service.

Yeah we bought 3x2BG Kingston RAM. Works awesomely!

Yes there is a big difference.

Now,if you want more stability, dial in rated specs and volts on rams in bios manually.

Thanks

Do you know if that will change the issue with the "not booting for three tries and then boots fine"-issue?

probably not that sounds more like it may be a bios issue but hard to determine without a tad more info.

What exactly happens on the 3 failed attempts please. No post with beeps no beeps no nothing??

Could be manny things, badly seated rams, bended cpu pins, gpu badly placed also.

Best thing to do,take all things apart again, check for foults, and try install things again.

We've tried to reassembly it all quite a few times now, but the problem is still there. I've read a bit about it online and apperantly it is a common issue with the Gigabyte card. Some said that if the RAM's were not in place correctly then it would reboot and stuff but they are seated firmly in their spot. Some said it will help with the issue if you fixed the thing with the voltage you guys were talking about. Will see what happens and get back to you.

What happens when we turn it on, it starts up fine, then posts and then we get some message about DRAM.. Something like "Locating lost DRAM size" and then it restarts. This happens 3-4 times and then everything is fine. Strange with that Gigabyte board. I'd rather go for an Asus to be honest but wth.

Thanks again.

yeah that sounds like either something is wrong with the BIOS or the RAM. Try updating the BIOS and see if that helps. Or just get the sabertooth and win.

Haha yeah but the guy is only 15 or something and he doesn't want the computer to be in parts anymore so he doesn't care if it has some start up issues. Just wants to game this and that so whatever works for him is cool. I'm just building the stuff thats all, I didn't even choose the parts so
