i current have a 80gb hdd.. which is enough space for me and i dont store alot of info on my hdd. i want a quicker drive because i do encode dvds. i was reading about the new sata drive which aparently do 300mbs?

i have a gigabyte socket 754 k8ns board (amd 320064bit)

i would like some advice on the best sata drive to choose and where to get it from

thanks.. i think i might go for the hitachi as alot of people like it.. now to just find the best price...

If you want Western Digital has one of the best praised on the market today.

WD Caviar SE16 400

Google it to get some reviwes, it benchmarks better than most hatachi's.

And it goes for about $235 american.

Your mobo isn't SATA2 compatible so you can scratch off trying to find a SATA2 drive... Just find a decently priced SATA1 drive from WD, Maxtor, Hitachi, or Seagate and it should suit you well.

I recommend the Caviars, MaxLines, Deskstars, and Barracudas (from their respective makers).

Yeah but SATA II are backwards compadable so, if hes willing to pay for it he could buy one and it would help if he ever upgrades his mobo in the future.

If you want something small get what you feel like but if you are going but make sure you get a 16 meg cache.

It all depends on what you want, if you give us a price range and if you are willing to try a raid array...

just bought it... bought 512 ddr and 80gb hitachi sata2 with8mb buffer.. they both came to about £70 which isnt bad and i have noticed an increase in speed :)

Cheers mate, glad it's working out well for you!

I wish I had space in my case to hook up 4 or 6 more Raptors... Maybe when I move over to the U2 UFO i'll stuff em in there :D

Those are a nice drive. I have 2 so far but after seeing other people's results with striping across 4 drives I think I'm gonna get 2 more.
