Help me choose my next GPU

Lightning is down to £423 as a one week special. Which would make faffing around with the stock and Zalman utterly pointless.

AMD. I didn't say get a stock cooled 480 mate. I said get a cheap stock cooled 480 and whack on the Zalman, giving you a Zotac 480 Amp ! (same cooler they use only in black and orange).

What retailer?

Should do. I mean it's not like they cost ten pence

Absolutely amazing card though, very envious !

Just read Tom's review again and the 480L is a violent work of art

I truly hope so Thomas.

It would be really nice to see Nvidia right their wrongs (and not leaving it to Zalman and MSI !).

In other news I ran Metro on my 470 today. Maxed out, Physx on, full DX11 with 4xFSAA and it runs like Seb Coe. Really can not believe how trumpy it is on ATI cards. It was literally unplayable even with Physx off but yet again I expect it was only using one card

To heck with profiles patches and drivers ! (beautiful game. Feels very limp though).

GTX580 will be fun then *whooooops!*

You'll love them.

But tbh, just as with the 480, I'd wait for the 3rd party cooled 580, and oc'd too. Zotac/MSI or ASUS tbf. 69xx *might* be available then, but it's not an option I'd take.

There are some interesting cooling options coming

Guys - SLI/xFire (including dual gpu single cards) are for the dogs

(imo of course

) Get the best single gpu card.

i dont know why you guys keep bringing up the 480 lightning. its been getting absolutly crappy results. i have heard no good news on overclocking results with that card, and pretty much every site i have seen said it couldnt be overclocked for crap. its like the first 5870 lightning. DO NOT GET IT! unless you dont plan on overclocking it.

I don't have any real experience in 'lightning' cards myself. But the likes of the Zotac AMP series are crazy oc'ers whilst also being very very cool. Can be made better by the willing enthusiast too.

I'd be interested in seeing how the 480 may dip in price once the 580 is out for a while, I know there's continuing price changes in the pipeline, but stores may not recipricate, especially uk ones..

You should back this up with links as i can only find good results,

also in regards to overclocking this card..

Yes it is. And in the review Tom pointed out that it probably could and would have if the software to do so was working.

As it was it was broken and thus Tom had to use AB.

And tbh it only costs around £70 more than a stock 480 so 900mhz and a lovely cooler makes it well worth the asking price.

Everything is ordered. Cheers lads.

i7 950, x58 Sabertooth, 6 gig Mushkin Redline, GTX 480 Lightning, Corsair HX 850W, OCZ 60 gig SSD, Noctua NH-D14, Antec 1200, Samsung P2450 24"

You havnt read our review then obviously. anyone that says it doesnt clock, obviously cant clock and should not be commenting.

The Zotacs dont have voltage options so dont clock any better than reference and the cooler is huge and compaired to the lightning its also pretty crap. I deffo wouldnt ever tell anyone to actually spend money on an AMP over the Lightning.
