Help me choose my next GPU

Sorry about the generic "tell me what GPU to buy thread"! But I'm in a state of confusion.

I can spend around £600 on the GPU, a wee bit more if its reasonable and worth it. Tom's Hardware suggests 2x GTX 470 (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/graphics-card-geforce-radeon,review-32014-6.html).

About 3hrs and 40 reviews later my head is in a mess. Can anyone advise me how to balance my wallet and a peachy GPU? I'm aware of the new 6xxx's and I can certainly wait if need be, but I need a good package for my new rig.

Cheers! Apologies if we are going over old ground.

I was in the same situation a while back and ended up settling for 2 gtx 460s and am very impressed with them

though the new msi lightning gtx480 looks very appealing too but more expensive. Then like you said the option of waiting for the higher ended amd cards

hmmm tough cookie

i would get 2 msi hawk 1gbs then a SSD

or a single msi hawk 480 if u want space etc

well now this all depends on what motherboard and CPU you have. if you have a AMD based MOBO with a nice AMD processor i would go with a radeon GPU. if not go with 2 GTX 470s. but if you do choose a GTX 480 DO NOT BY ANY MEANS GET A 480 WITH A STOCK COOLER YOU WILL REGRET IT. do not bother with the 480 lightning, msi crapped out with this one just like they did with the first 5870 lightning. i would also highly recomend a 5870 lightning II (THATS THE SECOND ONE).

Cheers for the suggestions lads.

I plan to get the Asus X58 Sabertooth and i7 950. I already have the Noctua NH-D14 for overclocking. I had also budgeted for an SSD. As an aside, what degree of performance improvement can I expect from the SSD?

I looked at 2x 460 GTX but I was put off by Tom's review:

So what are the downsides?

Well at very high resolutions and image quality settings the cut-down nature of the underlying architecture can limit the frame-rate so if you're after absolute performance then you might need to look elsewhere.

But for most people this is plenty powerful enough, and plenty cheap enough, to very much be the weapon of choice and the only nVidia setup we'd happily recommend.

I want more power

So, I'm left with either 2x GTX 470 or 5870 lightning II. (which I cant find for UK retail)

Anyone got any other suggestions?

what screen res u lookin to be playin at? cause a single 460 copes with 1920x1080 no problem never mind 2

and +1 for hmmblah join ther folding team!

You might want to wait till the end of the month. Rumour is the GTX580 will be released soon (November 9?), and the AMD 6900 cards are expected this month aswell.

this is why i orignaly said its a tuff cookie

with such a big budget i would wait for the info on the new cards from both camps

as they will equaly be ones to look out for man.

well going from spec lists the 580 should be epic, i dont think they will make the silly mistake of it being hot as super juice hungry then u gotta think of a 480 with 100 extra cuda cores in there it should spank everything single card wise

Sorry I didn't post more in depth earlier. Got this Fallout addiction haha.

OK. SLI 460 is a no no with your kind of cash balance. The lightning is the fastest single GPU card around right now. It's expensive but worth it. However, if you wanted to save £60 or so and get very close to the performance this

With this

Basically gives you a Zotac 480 Amp !. It's the same cooler though IMO a better colour. The fans light green too I'm pretty sure. If you don't fancy fitting an aftermarket cooler then the lightning is the better card. However, if you don't fold this is the fastest single card (though admittedly dual GPU) card around.

Do bear in mind though that Quadfire is about as useful as a chocolate teapot so you are going to have to decide if you want to end it there. It's obviously cheaper than the lightning but I suspect it is the faster single card (though dual GPU...)

Again that can be custom cooled (Arctic triple) which would basically give you the special one that Sapphire did (Toxic IIRC). But then that's going to run you almost £500 all in.

SLI 470 would be blisteringly fast and all in with shipping would set you back £400. However, please take note of the following.

One 470 is fine alone. They cool OK but are loud. Idle with the adaptive performance driver will give you 38-43c which is absolutely fine. However adding another one below it even if they are spaced out with two slots in between them would mean serious serious heat and even more noise. I can not recommend SLI 470 *unless* you custom cool them both which as of right now is a complete con. The same £35 cooler that I showed you above for the 480 (the green one) costs fifty five pounds for the 470. I don't quite understand why and it absolutely takes the piss but you are going to be looking at well over £110 to get them to behave. That means an outlay of £510+ which is just too much. Again you will be at the end of the road.

My advice to you is to get the stock 480 with the Zalman cooler. At least then in the future you can add another one. If you go SLI 470 you are going to be stuck. If you add a 5970 you are going to be stuck. The only option you have of making anything faster down the road is to go with a 480 but DO NOT use a stock cooled one as they're bloody awful.

You can hold off for the 580 but I will absolutely guarantee to you right now that your £600 will be gone in one big gobble. The 6970 or whatever the bloody hell AMD will call it will also command right around the same pennies. That's around about what the 5970 cost at launch. Buying *any* launch card is usually never worth it unless you want the bragging rights. Put quite simply two months down the line it will be worth considerably less than you paid. Even with £600 to play with sense MUST enter into this and the 4 series are very sensibly priced at the moment. Too sensibly priced to ignore (in my humble opinion of course). And that leads me to the next part of this.

SLI and Crossfire are a pain in the arse. Yes the performance gains are fantastic but there are a couple of things that really peeved me about it.

Crossfire needs profiles. It always needs profiles. This means on launch your game will run like crap and end up being a coaster until AMD pull their finger out of their backside.

SLI is even worse. Again it's a case of waiting around for a driver. The reason I got a 470 was because in the end I grew so tired of having to wait around for a profile. Not only that but in quite a good few cases the profiles simply didn't work. I would play a game on my 5770s and think "God this doesn't run very well" before realising it was only using one card.. And then I would have to faff and fiddle with the settings and god knows what else just to be able to play a ruddy game.

If all of that fiddling and tinker time sounds like fun? then by all means go with Crossfire or SLI. But, if you just want a machine you can power on and play games with without all the hassle then get a single card.

Thanks for all the replies, especially AlienALX. I will be joining you in fallout addiction soon mate.

After some thought I have decided to go for the 480, although I dont know whether this will be the Lightning or the 480 stock with the Zalman cooler. This months forthcoming paypacket will make that decision for me
biggrin.gif

I heed the warnings about SLI and Crossfire and as a result wont be considering the 460, 470 etc - Im not paying that much extra to custom cool. The dual gpu 5970 is also, as AlienALX said, a dead end as no feasible Crossfire in future. As for the 580, 6970, I'd prefer to wait 6-8 months before I jump in, possibly selling the 480 to ease the pain.

This leads me to the 480, hopefully lighting. I'll be building in about a 2 weeks and I'll put up some pics etc in the Project Logs board.

Cheers!

dont get the stock cooled 480

if you jhave to get a card right now to tide you over then get the 460 its fie for all games there is no point spendin £450 then seeling it later mate

a 460 will suffice

Lightning is down to £423 as a one week special. Which would make faffing around with the stock and Zalman utterly pointless.

AMD. I didn't say get a stock cooled 480 mate. I said get a cheap stock cooled 480 and whack on the Zalman, giving you a Zotac 480 Amp ! (same cooler they use only in black and orange).

Yeah its a tough decision, I am holding out to see what the 6900 series are like and the 580. I too have reconsidered a SLi setup to run a single card and if I run a single NVidia card I'll use my 460 hawk for a phys X.

Edit:

I figure the answer is no, but can you run a AMD card with a NVIDIA card dedicated for Phys X? Or does your main have to be Nvidia as well?
