help choosing sound system

so a cheap x-fi card then?

(i dont need front panel or ne of that shiznaz)

also, before i buy the speakers (ive got another 13 days remaining b4 i purchase) would ne1 suggest different speakers up to the value of £300?

Personally I'd go for the Wharfdales on the fronts, but the MS and the Gale's are also great speakers. I said to get the Gales as they match and let's be honest they'll still sound superb

You know the best thing to do? Go into Richer sounds and get them to hook them up there for you and lsiten

Hmmm 5.1 over optical --- not really good for music or HD media (games are great tho) the conversion to AC3 cuts the sound off above 17KHz (DTS aint much better) and the (comparatively) low bitrate of the transport stream sucks ass.

Better sticking to PCM SP/DIF (for stereo sources) or some Lossless HD Transport medium + periphery .. still then you will be wasting enough money to buy a llama farm in puerto rico(with slave girls and all) .

Speakerwise Harman Kardons are always good (tho usually 2.1) ; Creative labs/Soundworks (except their cheaper 7.1s) are quite good with good reproduction; logitechs are nice but heavy on the bass.Sony are usually Bass Heavy. Personally im a giant fan of technics (if you have the case) oh and Bose are usually substandard (for the $$) and bought by posers

A little secret: a set of £50 headphones will give you a true frequency response greater than any £400 speak system.
