hey guys

as you know I'm prepping up to get a new bedroom

i've heard nothing but good things from the sony stuff.

so here's my current lines of thinking:

AV Receiver: Sony STR-DA1200ES

Speakers: Sony SA-VE155

Wall Brackets: Sony WS-WV10D

(this will be part of the following: http://forum.overclock3d.net/showpost.php?p=125549)

kk guys, extra info:

i need to plug in the following:

TV (has 5.1 out (and im pretty sure at least a digi coax + HMDI out))

PVR (has optical and stereo out)

DVD (has 5.1, Digi Coax and HDMI)

PC (has 5.1 and SPDIF Coax)

views and opinions?

i have £500 to spend on AV Receiver and 5.1 Speakers

nething goes (as long as its on topic :P)

Personall I'd get a nice AV reciever for around £200. Something like this

Then spend the rest getting a nice set of 5.1's. Maybe Kef here

Or maybe perhaps make up a mix-n-match set:

Center (bit cheap, could get something a bit better):

Eltax center

Floor Standers

Rears (example to match)

Sub

Personally I'd be tempted to increase the audio budget as TV's can be gotton for cheap (and good) and splash out a little more on a nice set of Jamo Speakers or something similar

My suggestion is to read What HiFi for a bit of research

sweetness, ill check it out.

ive got a richersounds store near me, so i'll talk to those chaps and see what they come up with based on those recommendations.

Well Eltax stuff is ok, not amazing. I personally like the mellow sound and decent bass of Jamo, as well as Mission stuff.

Tannoy do 5.1 speakers, which are quite good for the dosh-richersounds usually has them at a good price.

recently heard yamaha ysp800 and ysp1000 sound projectors, quite convincing surround-worth considering for ur room size plus you wouldnt need a reciever and gets rid off the extra cables. they are been replaced with new range so u might be able to pick them up within ur budget

kk - ive upped my budget slightly.

hows this?

AV Receiver: Sony STR-DA1200ES

Speakers: Kef KHT1005

all in all about £600-700 or so

Kef are a good make, but i wouldnt touch sony. If you can go for the Cambridge Audio one. If not then the Pioneer VSX1016 is slightly better than the sony.

Whats wrong with sony..?

Whats right with sony? Most of the sony stuff i've owed has broken down, stopped working, or was just DOA. Then their customer support is suckie, and at the end of the day, most of the stuff they sell is rebanded.

I admit, I haven't used their Hi-Fi kit in years, but the above stops me from wanting to.

The only good thing i can say about sony, is that they, to some people, look nice.

i think i have only owned one hi-fi kit of them which broke in a few months - not much help and left with a broken product ^^ so im not recomending them :D

I'd recomend Cambridge Audio, a great british company. Bit pricey, but then they are top of the reviewing charts.

Cambridge is really really nice stuff actually. I also recommend Arcam. I saw one of their gorgeous 5.1 AMPS for sale at half price the other day. Soooo tempted. Shame I haven't got £800 :p

Agreed on Sony. Their audio is good kit but overpriced imo

which cambridge audio we talkin about here?

i look at the pioneer and it indeed does look worthy of buying.......u guys are the experts here, so my decision will be based on your comments

remember that i am already spending about £400 on the speakers. and tbh, total budget would be £700, i can't really go above that (im already £200 over budget with £700.....)

im looking at 100w per channel tbh (gonna run a 5.1 to start with, but possibly upping the kef system to 2 more pods thus creating 7.1)

also, if i have 100w kef speakers (per chan) could i accidentally blow the speakers with the pioneer sound system? (150w per chan on the pioneer)

Pioneer makes some really good equipment, at least they used to about a decade ago when I used to rock an all Pioneer Pro setup in my room.

well, ive just scored myself a Pioneer VSX1016 for £300 on ebay.

now gotta wait till first thursday of next month to buy my Kefs

Just make sure you're careful. Get into your house when it's as quiet as poss and crank them up bit by bit. Make sure you pick a couple of representative tracks to play and fine tune the audio to your own ears. Remember we're all different in our tastes in audio so don't let others sway your judgement.

Personally I usually like bass to be on 0 or +1 (if we're talking a digital setup) and the high sounds to be like +4 to 5. Mid range is pretty important so don't miss that out either. The "fill in" sounds make the difference from a good sound to a great sound.

Also remember that with expensive audio quality and clarity is more important than sheer volume and bass

i know for a fact that with the kef speakers, they start at 120hz, so i know that the sub has alot to fill in.

from the kef website, i heard that u gotta put the crossover at full or summat.

im an utter noob at this :P

so ANY help you can gimme with sound setup, i will be all ears.
