7970 Heatpads Thickness

Hello Overclockers,

Today i booted up my pc and my XFX 7970 Ghz Edition(reference design). Was sound like a hair dryer. Since i have a LAN coming next weekend. I need some help. I opened the card up and the heatpads where fully dry. and as hard as stone. Also the thermal paste was dry. Now that i changed the thermal paste i have one other problem i walked into. First i wanted to use me 0.3mm thick heatpads as a replacement. but they where to thin. so i ordered some 1mm ones. they where to thick. i dont want to spent another 10 bucks on wrong heatpads. So can anyone tell me what is the standard thickness of the heatpads used on a 7970 Ghz Edition? since i need it very quick:(. Sorry if this sounds a bit angry. but i really feel F***** at the moment. since my whole system is Sh*tting out. First my SSD died, then my PSU died and now this happends.

Greetings, Paul

Yes, you will need 0.5mm thermal pads. But be careful because not all the pads are the same thickness on a graphics card. For example when mounting a gpu block you need 0.5mm on the ram chips, 1mm on the Vrm's etc...
The most common pads are 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2mm.
Try measuring your old ones to be 100% sure on which ones you need for each specific location on your card.

Okay, i ordered some 0.5mm ones. it seems that all the heatpads on my card are 0.5mm since when i compare them to my 1mm and 0.3mm ones there inbetween.

So, i finnally mounted the heatpads. they where the right size:). temps so far are great for a stock gpu heatsink:
GPU: 73c
VRM1: 80c
VRM2: 56c

I am curious, where did you purchase the thermal pads for your card? I need to buy some pads for my XFX 7970 as well.

I bought them at Highflow.nl
It's a dutch store. i don't know if they ship worldwide.
But there is only one thing to bare in mind.
you need 0.5mm pads. my card has 0.5mm all around. so it's easy to order that. make sure you buy enough of it. 10x10cm should be alright. i was on the tight side with 5x6cm. i hope this helps you:).

Greetings, Paul
