HD7970 matrix platinum advice needed

Hey guys, I recently bought the Asus HD7970 Matrix Platinum. Now im away at the moment so i dont have the numbers with me but I noticed my results when testing with Unigine, cinebench, 3dmark etc were noticably lower than all of the online scores i could find.

Now all of those are done with intel cpu's, usually i7's. Now i am running an AMD FX6100.

My question is could the roughly 10 - 15% difference ive been seeing in my numbers be attributed to the fact im using that AMD FX6100 CPU???

Im no overclocker, I just like nice hardware so im not really up to speed on what what component may bottleneck other components.

Would my cpu be bottlenecking my GPU in these tests?

Intel per thread is faster than AMD, so any full benchmark that is also testing the CPU Intel will usually come out on top unless you overclock. If you are running a GPU intensive application you will see very little difference. Although from my experience going from a 1090t to a 2500k I noticed my Unigine scores improve roughly what you said 10 - 15%.

Also if you got a Matrix card and don't plan on overclocking it... You sort of wasted your money.

@Tobiman, If i wanted to be floating around the 30fps mark i would have bought a hd7850 not a hd7970 and saved myself £100 lol. I dont say this to be an arse its just how i feel.

Also im firmly in the camp of "30fps is not enough". not for the survival style shooters i enjoy playing from time to time. Also I play ArmA3 and I dont think 30fps does that justice. Its soooooo more fluid at around 50-60fps imho.

@jeff_s510 Ill be home on Saturday so ill try and get some numbers together for you lol. At least thats if ive got time after I start playing the new game i have called "Nether" :)

woop woop i cannot wait

Right here are some numbers, Ive been comparing it to my HD6950 so those are here too...

HD7970 Matrix Platinum @ Stock:

Unigine Heaven (maxed out @ 1920 x 1080)

FPS: 18.4
Score: 463
Min FPS: 9.7
Max FPS: 45.7

Unigine Valleys (maxed out @1920 x 1080)

FPS: 15.1
Score: 632
Min FPS: 8.5
Max FPS: 29.5

SOME GAMES (Green= hd7970/ blue = hd6950)

Nether = 23fps/35fps
Euro Truck Sim 2 = 55fps/58fps
Minecraft = 130fps/140fps

Im using a AMD FX6100 cpu, its OC'ed @ 4.2ghz so i dont think that should be the problem(bottlenecking the GPU). Im replacing it this week with a FX6300 that ill OC to about 4.2Ghz aswell to see if that makes any difference!!

Whether the CPU is a bottleneck or not shouldnt the HD7970 still be wiping the floor with my 3-4 year old HD6950????

im at a loss here. if the replacement CPU doesnt drastically improve these numbers(which i really dont think it will), I think my only choice is to RMA this piece of junk!! lol

Did you do a proper driver sweep before switching cards?

Yes I became so obsessed with this ive reinstalled windows again so it had a clean slate.

Ive tried the current driver, older drivers, even the beta driver.

This 7970 doesnt perform as well as my 6950 ever it seems

Run mis afterburner or some other monitoring tool and put up the On Screen Display for FPS, GPU usage, Memory Usage, and over all usage. This is so you can seen if the GPU is even running at full speeds. Also if your computer has a lucid chip on board DO NOT install the lucid drivers, and if you have on board graphics, try disabling that too.

use afterbuener to check the gpu useage and core clock, make sure the card is ramping up when its under load. ive had issues with my 5770 i use in school being stuck in low power mode, or 2d mode, and the card stays clocked at 50 MHz.

Ive been running msi afterburner for a bit and it seems its ramping up to about 80-90% when playing Battlefield 3, but most other games its stuck at around 40%-50%, In one game it was at 22%- 30% lol wtf

When it was at 22% - 30% was the game running at a smooth FPS? Some games do not run at a constant 80% - 90% unless it is needed. Killing floor on a 680 only runs at like 30% for me. Try underclocking it 100mhz to eliminate the possibility of a bad clock.
