Hardrives for raid 0

I want a raid 0 for its performance increase. I also dont really need more than 200gb so 2 80gb drives or 2 100gb drives would do fine. My main need is performance and relative quietness. Also i need to be able to buy it off specialtech (any overall winners and i can ask specialtech very nicely if they can stock it hopefully :) ) It will be going on a p5b deluxe unless something a lot better comes out soon

I run 2xs Hitachi Deskstar 80gb's in SATAII RAID0, and they are pretty darn fast and VERY cheap compared to the raptors.

Agreed

Alternatively get Seagate 7200.10 series with Perpendicular recording. VERY VERY fast and MUCH cheaper than Raptors (waste of money imo)

I vote for the Raptors. Fastest access time and highest burst transfer speeds, makes games and other programs with lots of small files just rip like no other. In RAID 0 they're unstoppable.

A cheaper alternative would the two mentioned by Kemp and XMS.

the raptors are way too much for me - perpendicular is a must as well for extra performance, i dont think the hitachis have perpendicular do they and nor do the seagates at such a ow storage level im after?

The only company currently making PRT drives is Seagate (they may have patented the technology?). And I think they make an 80 or 120gb with PRT iirc.

i mean like whats the point in a lot of extra space wen ur not gonna use it? ive got a 120gb ide hdd atm and ive only used 44gb and ive got nearly everything i use - obviously newer things will take up more space etc. but 200gb would be the max ill use imo

how much do u reckon vista will take up?

100gb max for me then but if getting perpendicular means going to 120gb ill have to get that...i cant seem to find any perpendicular drives under 160gb

so choose between one drive with perpendicular-ness or 2 without perpendicular in raid 0 - which would give the best performance for games loading times and similiar (im a hardcore gamer!!!!)

RAID 0 is faster, but not as secure with your data

if i have to format my drive the worst thing to happen is a loss of homework :) ill prolly backup anything important anyway

ive decided that perpendicular is more important as its a newer technology and better warranty etc.

if i need more space i can get another but for now ill get the smallest 7200.10 seagate offer :)

i dont recommend seagate.

have one a 7200.9 and its by far the moist noisy harddrive i have.

much worse then even my old 30gb deathstar.

and their is no performance gain with perpendicular, i have the same performance on my 7200.9 as the

7200.10 that was recently reviewed.

if i was to buy a harddrive today it would be a hitachi no doubt.

I like my Hitachi's but after that Seagate I reviewed I wouold deffo consider one as my main drive. They aint that quiet - but he was considering Raptors that are quiet in no way at all.

Plus I've redone benchies on the Seagate and it beats out the Hitachi

Must remember to update the review
