hard drive partitioning ..

I like acronis. It may cost some, but I look at it as an investment. And boy do I rely on it now.

200g image tho.. gonna take some time >.<

wont need to use a program now :) .. as my new pc will not have an OS installed im doing a fresh install of it of which windows asks me to partition drives anyway

http://www.scan.co.uk/tekspek/view.asp?a=18&p=1

^^^ following that guide it shows you how to partition the drive but only shows you doing one (C) .. once one drive has fomatted and if you made more than one .. will the setup go back so you can select another drive or will it do them all in one?

is it best just to format all the partitions in NTPS instead of FAT ?

also on my current PC i have a 'C' drive and a 'D' drive ... will i need the 'D' drive (contains all my backup stuff i think) or will be alright only having 'C' and my gaming partition ?

The best thing to do is have a small OS partition, which just has basic stuff like Windows, Firefox, AV program etc. I recommend 8GB but you can go as low as 6GB. Don't try for 4GB though - you will be able to install Windows okay but about a year later after all the crap mounts up in your profile folder, Windows Updates, .NET compiler cache etc you will run out of space and Windows will rapidly die.

I then usually have a programs partition where all my apps and games get installed. Finally, have some data partitions or drives.

The reason for having a small OS partition is twofold. First, you get better performance. The outer edge of the hard drive is the fastest part, and by having only a 8GB partition the drive head doesn't have to move as far as it might on a larger partition when accessing system files. Secondly, if you need to re-install for some reason you can just format that partition. When you re-install all your apps over the files already on your programs drive, they will pick up all your old save games, customisations, email and settings etc.

Oh, and having only an 8GB system drive makes it easier to do Ghost backups as well. Doing one a week takes 10 minutes.

Faster on the outside ?

EDIT: Yeah I see where u`r going. It takes less of an internal revolution to rotate the outer rim. Faster is too broad a statement for me thinking physically. If u were sat on the hub ring of a platter, u would say it was faster than the outside.

I think you are getting confused :)

The outer edge is travelling faster. The hub (inner edge) is rotating at exactly the same rate as expressed in revolutions per minute (RPM), but it's speed (or more accurately velocity) is lower.

just trying to register it all in my head :p off to get the XP cd of a tech friend to install it on my rig :D

out of the 160GB im going to use 60GB for gaming (il keep on top of things as i doubt il have too many games that it will need more) and 100GB for windows/software :D

It can`t travel any faster as it`s 1 platter, a solid item, which travels at 1 speed. If the platter was broken down into seperate parts or rings, each ring could then move at a different rate. As it is, the rings are all combined.

Where ur confusing urself, I think, is where u can store more information on the outer edges, therefore requiring less head movement.

well im on my new rig now and everything is set up :D .. runs sweet and is a lot quicker than my old pentium 4 ... i set 90GB for the OS and software and 70GB for games :) .. just updating all the windows stuff from the net and im running avg free antivirus :) once ive done everything update wise il get my games on my pc and see you all online tomorrow :p
