h50 on ice

I decided today to put my H50 in a bucket of ice and see what happens. Well, the temps dropped down to ~10c and windows started at 4.2ghz. I started to run a benchmark but it BOSD and i looked over to see the following and decided to put this little experiment off until winter time....

I also decided that the best way to dry it was to keep the res outside of the case and get it really hot so the water would evaporate.

Yeah, I was thinking about getting some dice. I wonder if it would still condensate?

Yes it will dude. The coldness of the tubs/rad/block makes the moisture in the atmosphere condensate. If you wanna try it properly, I recommend wraping the tubes in some cloth or some sort of foam.. and put some paper towels on your GFX Card, as one drop of condensation will kill your card.

ima make a teeeny tiny little suggestion. same setup, but fill the cup with cold water & ice. the water will couple the heat fins on the radiator to the ice, and as the ice melts drain off the extra water and add more ice.

good luck! Dont leave it unattended!!!

For the best results, use a salt/ice bucket, as the ice will start to melt at a lower temperature, and the equilibrium between ice and water keeps the temperature constant at about -10C. Also don't forget to keep the water in the bucket moving or the fins will not get enough heat transfer. DICE may well have some pretty bad effects like forming ice in the radiator, and will condense water in the case...

If you are really serious about DICE, get some, then mix it with acetone (nail polish remover), (do not use a polystyrene cup), and the resulting slush will be about -80C

Hmm this has given me an idea. Hear me out, it's not as dumb as putting a PC in a fridge (and yeah, I've seen it).

Items needed.

1 small chest freezer.

1 radiator (pc obs or even bigger)

1 block and pump etc.

OK, mount the rad inside the freezer. Drill two tube sized holes through the side of the freezer and plumb in the pipes, sealing them at both sides with liquid nails and silicon sealant to prevent any condensation making it down the tubes (running)

Turn on freezer for a couple of days, run PC. Now obviously there would be the problem of condensation on the tubes and block, but I don't think it would be terribly bad. And you could always mount some fans around the tubes to dry it up quicksmart.

I see that this is the "ruin your radiator" thread

hey just a word of caution....if those tubes and fittings get cold enough...they will crack....then condensation will be the least of your fluid worries....

yer skatin' on thin ice

i sorta did that same trick with the air cans you use for electronics. i put it up side down and started spraying. my temps went from 38c to 21c then i ran out of air lol.
