Guide On How To Change The Colour Of Noctua Fans

Do you get any residue or powder off these after dying?

I don't really know the science behind dying plastic, that's all...

Dyeing is a process at a chemical level, the dye or colour forms a covalent bond with the plastic thus shares electron at an atomic level, leaving no residue whatsoever sort of becoming "one" lol

Ah exams, got to love May/June=(

Think I might buy one and give it a go the same way you did with the noctuas, Wanting red & black case fans and on a rad so it's either doing this to some noctuas/typhoons or just going with some Phobya Nano-2G's.

Had a few noctua lying around I wasn't using so decided to try those first. The motors are a bitch to get off, one thing to definteley not use to try and melt the glue holding it to the frame is a heat gun, think I might have melted part of the back of the motor even tho I was holding it quite far away, came off mind! The 2nd one I managed to get off easier by slowly prying it away from the frame.

They're currently in the pan!

HMm really struggling to get the dye to take to these, using liquid rits dye.

heat the water up further, the water must not be hot enough. are you dyeing it red and black? what part red and what part black? (frame/blade)

i used powder rit dye, check the concentration difference when comparing powder rit dye and liquid.

the liquid may have less so you may need to add more.

let me know what happens! and ill help accordingly

Yeah red and black, fan blades red and the frame black. Just done the blades so far, they have turned somewhat reddish but nowhere near as good metalanim has got them. Will try higher heat then next and upload an image over the weekend.

6 - Take the fan frame and blade out, give it a good rub down to get rid of uneven colouring this is how mine looked after a good polish

When you say polish, you mean just wipe it dry with a kitchen towel/paper towel, or are you using some type of oil/polish?

Great post, by the way!

This looks sick firat! Definately gona be doing this after my exams haha

Did you glue the fan blades back on to the motor/ were they glued on in the first place?

Brilliant idea and great guide

Gotta get me some nf-f12s now!

The motor had to be glued onto the frame, you just push the blades back onto the motor and voila

Now my English isn't great, so I've got a few questions.

1. Where did you buy the rit dye?

2. With rub down, do you mean just rub it with a cloth?

Answers would be appreciated

But this is an amazing guide!

But this is an amazing guide!

1. Got the rit dye off eBay!

2. Yes this is to even out the dye after you have dyed it

Good luck!

Kind of weary to take my NF-F12's apart now, it says on the little sheet that comes with it "removing the impeller from the frame will break the sealing of the bearing" meaning its no longer dust sealed :|
