GTX 980 and GTX 970 Listed!

GTX 980 and GTX 970 have been listed on Synnex. The listing reveals that Gigabyte is working on a G1 Gaming GTX 970 and a reference GTX 980.

Both, GTX 980 and GTX 970 have 4GB 256bit memory configuration.

NVIDIA GTX970 128*32 DDR5 256 BIT

Gigabyte GTX 980 (GV_N980D5_4GD_B )
NVIDIA GTX980 256BIT/4096MB/PCI-E 3.0/128*32 DDR5 256 BIT

There have been a few benchmark runs posted online of the GTX 980/970. If they are real, then the performance is a bit disappointing.

This confirms the rumor that Nvidia is skipping the 800 series.

I knew that the performance increase was not going to be much, but I underestimated by how much. I think the top of the line GTX 980 would be easily beaten by a reference overclocked air cooled GTX 780TI.

Nvidia better have cut the power usage drastically/ made the card much smaller so that it fits in small htpc or there's not going to be that much point in upgrading from the 780/TI

What is this card compared to the GTX 770 or the 780 in terms of product stack? If it's a replacement for the 680/770 on the same fab process those are rather impressive results. Nice 4GB vram to boot.

I have to admit I was expecting a bit more, especially with all the rumours, if I were to upgrade [at least beating the 780ti would make me consider it] but if it is to replace the 780 then is this just the r9 285 nvidia style?! If so all rather uninspiring.

Nope, there is a 900 series for mobile coming as well. I think the reason is that the mobile GPUs were one generation ahead of the desktop GPUs, i.e. there are already 8xx mobile cards.

Why did they skip the 800 series? They skipped the 300 series back ~4 years or so ago, for whatever reason.

Nvidia's branding has gone through many weird transitions, but then again I can't think of a single company that does branding well. They all make an obscene mess at some point.
