GTX 590 Ultimatum

So I've finally, after months of researching and asking around, decided to go with the GTX 590. At the moment I'm waiting for it to be in stock but I'm getting the odd feeling it may be the wrong choice.

My reasons for choosing this card:

-EVGA lifetime warranty.

-Single card setup (and powerful enough to last years on it's own).

-I have no intention of overclocking the card.

-For once I can say I have the best GPU available (other than the mars II)

Of course the money is a downside, but I think of it like this... I won't need to buy a second card down the road. Even if I wanted to in a year, another 590 would be down in price.

Is this reasonable or am I just trying to convince myself that it's a good idea?

Couple things,

The way tech is going the card wont be able to COMPLETLY max out the most demanding game out in 3 years. I would hope not so graphics can be pushed and better games come out along with better cards. So i say a couple years at most being able to do that but will play anything out with ease for awhile.

Another is the GTX 590 is a limited edition card. Reason why they are slow on making them and will soon completely stop for the next gen card for PCI 3.0 coming q1-q2 next year. So there wont be a buy another one down the road unless its a used one and i would give advice to stray away from things like that.

But in its self, the gtx 590 will be good for years of Photoshopping or gaming and will last you a good while.

Im getting two ordered tomorrow actually once my check hits the bank. For my build been waiting for them to come in stock myself.

Good enough reason.

Dual gpu cards, although seemingly expensive at the time, do tend to be a big investment.

If you're not a paranoid type that needs to update everytime a new generation comes about for 5-10% increase in performance, the dual cards 'can' last years.

Top of the range single-gpu cards (480, 5870, 580, 6970) themselves offer great value for money for the non-paranoid. Sure the next gen offers the similar 5-10, 15-20% if you're fortunate, but in many cases we're talking about 100 fps to 115 fps - which is usually a nonsense you'll never notice. Maybe if the minimum fps go from 30 to 35 ? pfft.

Anywho, no that I personally like dual gpu cards, but you will notice the likes of 4870x2, 295, etc lasting mightily long in the rankings for gfxcards, sometimes competitive to 2 generations after. That's a pretty good investment imo. Enthusiasts have enough to 'worry' about with Intel releasing socket sets each time the bank-manager increases their loan payments

Getting a card you should be able to stick in a system and forget about for years is a banker in itself.

Cards like the 480 (570 in this generation) are still maxxing games out on 24" screens. Some rediculous savings were to be had last month when they were being almost given away by e-tailers for £160 or so.

Anyone buying a 590 or 6990, and not paranoid, should have a card that will last them 2+ years. Unless Dx12 comes out soon, I'd even say 3-4 years.

Unless you are watercooling don't even consider overclocking, you will fry it in seconds, VRMs are still crap. My first choice was the 590 until i realized they have absolutely ZERO overclockability and very limited under water. besides the 6990 is faster.

Also you may be waiting a while. I think Nvidia has stopped production of the 590 just an assumption based on Amazon hasn't had any in at least 4 months (not counting the exaggeratedly expensive ones) and newegg has stopped selling them. My friend RAMd his 590 from ASUS a few months back and is still waiting for it.

I don't want to sound BIAS as I am still wanting a 590 too.

I just ordered on from NCIX and got a price match to NewEgg. I'm liquid cooling and not overclocking. But thanks!

Do they have them in stock at NCIX??? And they price matched??? UGH FML my dang bank is taking their sweet a** time pushing my check through and its really beginning to make me angry...

You should of cashed your check then give the cash to them and tell them to put it in your account. Checks take a few days, cash is instant. That's what I do.

Yeah, cashing at the counter is insta-deposit. And yes, NCIX has them, they are $860 and I price matched for $750!

It's a good idea. If your system can run SLI properly you might have prefered 2 580's, and I guess it'll last with most games until DX12, mainly because consoles domination in games development and I think the next gen console is aimed at DX12

I'd say go for it , i just upgraded from gtx 280 sli'd to a POV gtx 590 ultra charged and it was def worth it , much better fps and quality and the 1 590 has less power and heat then my 2 280's

Already bought it a week ago.

Good to hear , i see you went liquid cooled , curious to know what temps your getting as i'm on air with the stock cooler and am getting 36 idle , 77 under load with an ambient of ~ 22 ( card is clocked at 670 as standard ) ?

Sorry, my previous post gave the impression that I had liquid cooling set up and running... I don't. I was planning for a full liquid setup but changed my mind. I just bought the H100 and plan to air cool the rest of my system.

Wish I could be of more assistance. I can let you know what temps I get on air though.

Yeah it would be interesting to compare , just been playing Bad Company 2 maxxed out for the last 3 hours and temps only got too high 60's and thats without vsync although i only have the 1 590 . Keep an eye on that H100 , the failure rates seem very high going by the noise on the Corsair forums .

Yeah, I will keep an eye on it for sure. It was recommended by PC Magazine, PC Format, Maximum PC, NewEgg, and several other reviews saying it was amazing albeit a bit loud. I have 4 noctua fans to replace the stock ones though.

The people having no problems will not post in the forums about how good their H100's are running, and it's usually a very small minority that have problems who put doubt in the minds of others, so I wouldn't be too worried.
