Hello everyone i was originally going to get a ati 5870 as there now £235 but with the ati 6870 being cheaper and of a similar performance it put me off so now im thinking of getting a gtx 480 at £330,here are my specs,i7 920,gigabyte ud3r-x58,650w psu,6gig ram, samsung f3 in raid0 and a ati 5770 1gig, I'm running @ 1920x1200 so its really putting my 5770 to work but its not really cutting the mustard with the more higher demanding games,bc2,metro etc £330 is my max wallet ive been putting away i know the 69 series card's are around the corner but i need to buy asap my brother is buying my 5770 off me which bumped my budget up to £330 so i need a replacement and while i have the money and before i lose my job after the new year i want a little bit of power for once! my gpu history xfx 6800gs,8800 gts 320mb and ati 5770,i don't plan on running sli or cross-X or 3D any advice i would really appreciate it im talking myself in and out of this purchase!

look at the 470 mate its well within budget so you can get a decent cooled one

u would need to spend like 450 to get a decent 480

or 2 asus 1gb 460's i no you said u dont use SLi but the 460's are monsters when paired

Are they? who said that?

I think AMD's number games are paying off here unless I missed something.

Ed.

Unless I am mistaken (and I could well be !) the 6870 was basically a rebranded 5850 that refuses to overclock very well. And, as we all know, buying the latest cards is usually the worst economy. The reason for that is simple. As new cards release at a full release price every card before them drops in price so you can always pick up more power for the same money by not getting the newest cards.

I'm quite surprised that the 480 hasn't dropped more in all honesty. I thought they would be around the £300 mark now. But I'm per-etty sure that the 5870 will kick the crap out of a 6870. The true replacement isn't really here yet mate. The 6850 is the same sort of card in spec and speed as the 5830 (which was always a bit of a lemon given that the 460 beat it and the 5830 was a greedy sod for power) and the 6870 is the replacement for the 5850.

Now obviously the value in the 6 series comes with Crossfire X (same as the lower end 5 series cards, then) but the true star of the 5 series show was the 5870. The 5970 was very expensive and overkill but the 5870 was just right (said the three bears).

You could always opt for a well cooled 470 like this one.

Which again is priced perfectly. Faster than a 5850 (Nvidia made sure of that before releasing it) and not as fast as a 5870 but £30 cheaper. Comes with Physx, CUDA ETC.

You pays your money you makes your choice

Only just realised it has a decent OC on too ! good 10% there. Shame it was £230 when mine was £173 or I'd have got it. Fact is mine with a decent cooler on will still be around the same price and I won't have to live with the red pcb which is quite bizarre on a Nvidia card lol. I don't know why they stopped using green PCBs in favour of black ones that absorb more heat due to the colour

its the card i told you to get lol

yer the red PCB is odd but i shut my case off so i would never see it.

it can be overclocked alot higher aswell

A friend asked me this recently, he ended up buying a 5850 of Ebay. I told him 460's were good.

You should get at least be able to get a GTX 460

I was really looking past the like's of the 470,460 as i said while im lucky anuff to have the money to spend on a card is it worth just getting the gtx480 the gtx580 is really a bit OTT in price thanks for the input peeps i think im just looking for some reassurance it's just came at a bad time in the gpu market to buy!

well there is only one 480 to buy and thats the MSI but its alot more money

so its ither 2 460's that will beat a 480 anyway

or 1 decent cooled 470 that is ur best single card solution

£330 is a real kinda in-between figure for me.

The 5870 would do a great job for you, the 470 will also with of course the added advantages for the game(s) mentioned.

Temptation for me would be to save that much more cash. Even if you went the 480 route with a custom cooler, which would give you the £400+ card for around £360+.

(I'm not a fan of dual card/gpus)
