GTX 470 problem :(

Ugh. Okay, so I just got a GTX 470 recently, waited a bit until I got the rest of the parts to upgrade comp.

Anyways.. I uninstalled nvidia stuff (drivers, etc) that were installed from my 9800GX2. Installed drivers for GTX470, and it seemed to work. However, if you turn the computer off then back on, it will NOT boot back up.

My motherboard has LED's that light up around certain areas, for example the VGA LED stays a constant red, meaning there is a problem.

But if I switch back to my 9800GX2, tada, no problem at all.

I uninstalled drivers again, took out the gx2, put in the 470, installed drivers, restarted and it was working... then shut the comp down, turned it back on, and then the red light AGAIN. It will NOT start up.

I put my 9800gx2 and bam, it starts up fine.

Wtf?

Comp specs are 4gb ddr3-1600

Vista Ultimate 64 bit

Phenom II 955

Mobo is M4A89TD Pro/USB3

what power supply do u have mate maybe thats to fault? or it might just be a duff card

My power supply might be an 850 watter, the card would run fine before I shut down comp.

After the comp gets shut down, it would not start up. I tried different things. Trying a dif slot, different pin adapters, etc. :/

But on a semi-related note, I just ordered a 1000 watt modular PSU.

Have you heard of a problem like this before with graphics cards? Think it would be a good idea to RMA?

what exact psu do u you have is it a quality one cause you can get cheapo 850w ones that can do no where near that kinda power as ive just had to replace my psu i had a jeantech 700w psu where its got plenty of wattage for 2 x GTX460's it struggled with amperage over the 12v rail so i got a corsair tx850, can you try the card in a different system? if the card does the same on a different system then its more than likely a dodgy card and ur best rma'n it

The psu is a Zumax X4 series.

Could it be the PSU even though the card was running fine before the comp shut downs?

I could browse the net and stuff fine, and could restart comp and it still worked. But if I do a shut down, then power back up, it won't come up. D:

i havent personally seen anything by that psu company but its always best to buy top of the line psu's from places like corsair, enermax etc

yeah it can be the psu i had mines running my 460's but when i restarted it refused to boot post for ages and when it did and got into windows 1 card wasnt being seen so i restarted and checked each card on its own in both slots and it booted with them no problem each time so that lead me to know its the psu thats at fault and bought a new one

I could be wrong but I think that Zumax is another name/subsidary of Topower (who make PSU's for Tagan / be-Quiet and the like).

If that's the case, your PSU should be of _reasonable_ quality....well certainly not a cheap £10 eBuyer jobbie anyway

However, there's nothing to say that there won;t be compatibility issues between the PSU and your 470. So if you can, maybe try a friends PSU in your rig and see if it makes any difference?

yeah like jim said try it in/with a mates psu and also comparing it to the corsair tx850 that does a max output of 840w on the 12v rails and yours only does 696w at peak and only supplies 58A even tho the 4 rails have 80A combined

what 1000w psu did u buy?

The GX2 is a greedy sod. Probably more greedy than the 470 tbh. So I wouldn't suspect the PSU really. I would, however, look for a new bios for your motherboard. I know that when I got my Asrock Xfire it wouldn't do anything with a 5770 in. Not even post, no display, nothing.

EDIT.

My motherboard has LED's that light up around certain areas, for example the VGA LED stays a constant red, meaning there is a problem.

As I said, go and see if a new bios has been released for your board. When I got my Crosshair 2 and put my 280GTX in there I had all sorts of crap. The card would work, but the fan would spin to full speed at the slightest provocation and when I looked at my temps I was idling at 84c . Something clearly wasn't right in Texas (Houston, we have a problem).

Straight to Asus with my teeth clenched and snarling I immediately discovered a new bios that said - "Fixes problem with some graphic card". Gotta love that Engrish. And quelle suprise, as soon as I flashed it and rebooted my card was tranquill once more.

Thanks for the reply. I actually have already tried to update bios, but it might of shipped out with the latest bios on it.

I'm still not sure what the problem is.

It will run the 470 before drivers are installed, and after drivers are installed AS LONG AS the comp doesn't get shut off. If the comp gets shut off, then it will NOT start back up with the 470.

But with the 9800GX2 it was able to start back up from a cold start maybe. However, it started doing it to where it wouldn't start up with the 9800gx2 from a cold start after drivers were installed also.

I put my old ram and motherboard in and it did the same thing to where it wouldn't start from a cold start up (with the 470), yet the 9800GX2 works.

Ideas?

Edit: I also checked cpu stats and ram stats with coretemp and cpu-z, things seemed peachy with those.

The problem is either power supply, mobo(s) or graphics card(s) maybe, arg. :/

Odd this, I too have a similar problem yet to resolve, my gtx280ocx also does not like cold booting. Been like this for some time now.

The only way I can get mine to boot, and I'm in no way stating that this will resolve your issue us to with one hand lift the card up in it's slot providing slight tension then powering up.

When I do this it boots every time from a cold start.

Once on, I can restart as many times as I like.

I may have either warped my mobo, damaged my pci-e slot or as you guys are suggesting need a bios flash or have a psu problem. ( antec quattro 1000w )

Watching with interest
