GTX 460 SLI psu?

Im considering getting a second gtx 460 in my rig but i think that my current psu CX500 will not be sufficient enough to run those two at full load.

I've been looking at some other cheap psu that i could get and i was wondering if the GX600 will be enough, according to the full load consumption and the wattage on 12v rail on gx600 it should be enough but im not sure if it will be.

if you hve any suggestion for other psu then go ahead, id prefer high quality psu but not too expensive

Na I doubt it to be honest. Your gpus will draw probably 200w each, maybe a touch more if you are ocing them, it's hard to know your platform power draw because of what you've overclocked the cpu to but based on a phenom 2 quadcore you'll be pulling around 200w again. So I'd say 650.

As you are looking for a decent quality psu (very sensible) you are looking at:

TX650 (non modular) for £74

But I would be tempted to to get something a little bit more powerful to give you some overhead for the future. Since you are turning to SLI you will probably do it again when you upgrade down the line and arguably it would save you another psu upgrade then. 650-850w.

With components getting more efficient you can probably get away with a 650 for a non powerhungry platform with 2 mid range cards.

We tend to recommend 850w for the most modern performance systems with sli/xf (ie 1155 with 2x 7970/680s running on air).

750w gives you the middle of the road - a decent system with a little overhead but it's not enough today for a top notch sli rig (but might be in the future).

People who want that and watercooling + loads of fans, LEDs and fan controllers need to be looking at 1000-1200w or more if they have 3 or 4 gpus.

So in that regard I'd say 650 or 850w. 650 of you are happy with your setup and don't intend on making a beastly 1155/2011 twin top-of-the-line card setup now or in the future. Go 850 if you do.

yeah tx650/750 was my other choice incase the gx600 wouldnt be enough,

my specs are:

amd phenom x4 @ 3.5 158W

8gigs of kingston hyperx grey at 1700mhz

dvd, hdd, 4 case fans 3 off controller, one power fan for cpu rad, total 5 fans

gtx 460 at 922/ 1038 / 1844 will probably turn down with sli

asus m5a97pro.

but looking at that ill probably have to save up abit for the tx750 or if possible the 850 one.

i am currently using a ocz 750w psu for my gtx 460 sli system. i would tell you not to use any less than 750w, especially given that hefty gpu overclock. i am curious what voltage you use on your card?

I run on max software voltage

1.087 I can lower to a minimum of 1.07 but its not as stable over time, bare in mind i have the palit sonic platinum, and im actually lucky to push it that far, but i need to get something like gelid ice as it gets to that 70C at full load and 70% fans(62 on 100%)

and OCZ

i wouldnt want to use a low quality psu but im probably gonna go with tx750 or 850 if i can afford it

the only reason i own it was because my old psu started to make noises and i didn't have much money to get a better brand, it was at such a good price at the time. it runs fine it would take a hungrier system than mine to put it under full load. I have never had problems with ocz, but that's likely because i've not used their ram or ssd'.

i was curious about your voltage so i could approximate the additional power draw becouse of it, but since your board cannot use sli, i would recommend a 7000 series card if you are still planning to upgrade. the reduced power draw, temps and drastically better architecture, if you cross-fire eventually they have a new feature which turns off the second card at idle which will reduce idle power draw aswell.
