Graphics card help.

Hey all,

I am wondering if i can get some advice and help on choosing a new card.
I have an MSI GTX580 twin frozr 2 at the moment and i want to upgrade to a newer card but cash is very tight.
Is there a newer card that is the same performance or better at a good price point ?

I am unsure what to look for when upgrading to anything else that a top range card like i did when the 580 launched.
I would prefer a quiet nvidia card with the gpu cooler being one that exhausts out the rear of the case as i have quite a small formfactor case although it can take full length cards.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Is your card defective? I dont understand why youd want to "upgrade" to a new video card with similar performance if cash is tight.

Best bang for the buck right now is AMD cards so if youre looking for good value, Nvidia aint goti it right now. An AMD R9 290 would offer about double the performance of your GTX580. Here's a Gigabyte for $360 shipped plus a $20 mail in rebate.

If thats too rich for your blood, you can get a R9 280x which is around a 65-70% bump. Cheapest one I can find is this HIS model for $290 shipped with a $20 mail in rebate.

why not have a look around on eBay, as you will not get any good AMD reference cards (which exhaust out back), your be bet is to look for a reference GTX 780 on ebay, AMD's reference coolers will not meet your demands.

The reason I say to get a second hand GTX 780 is because they arent able to compete with the 290 price/perf, however nvidias reference coolers are good.

Thanks for the feedback :)

With regards to my 580 and just a small or similar performance for a newer card i am finding it is starting to pull upwards of 80-90 degrees inside my h440 before i had a enormous CM HAF case so cooling was not a problem but inside the h440 and it being more compact it just does not have the airflow to keep it cool while playing BF4 or Archeage,Tera ect.

@barnsley
NZXT H440 i know it is an ATX and not exactly "compact" like i stated in my opening post but a lot smaller than my last case and due to the sound damping the card just bakes.
The motherboard and cpu (z97 ranger,i7 4790k) do not hit over 38c and 65c respectively under load so i know it must be that the card is not cooling sufficiently, I have owned the card since the 580 hit the market a few years ago so i am unsure if it is age related ??

@newbie
I did not want to throw a 780 or ti in the case as it seems i am having issues with dissipating the heat already without increasing it with using a more powerful card.
Plus a baby on the way so no way of funding such a card.
I only have access to a 550W (corsair rm) Gold PSU and unsure of power requirements.

I hope this helps answer any questions and thanks for the help.

Well, reference cooler on GTX 780's will dump most of the heat OUTSIDE the case (instead of keeping it INSIDE like your current card).
So it should helped with your temp problem.

Besides that, refrence cooler is REALLY nice (noise/looks wise) :)
See TTL's review of it here : LINK

H440 with bad cooling? Thats hard to believe. You have 3 intake fans available at the front with little to no obstruction in the way. You probably just need more exhaust to suck out all that air tbh.

tbh the cooling isn't that good with it, a few people have been complaining.

Its still not that bad though, you're not exactly stuck with a lack of fan options.

I dont get it, I just told you to get the reference 780 so that the heat would get dumpted OUTSIDE the case. That 550W is able handle a 780ti with a 4770k quite well.

Also the 780's are a hella cheap on eBay right now, you could just sell off the 580....

I didn't mean to sound like i did not take on your advice i appreciate the help.
I will take a look at ebay and see what i can find.
I will also look at adding in a couple of fans as an exhaust in the roof of the case.

Cheers.
