GPUs. Just how much is too much?

Last year when I built my system I just went all out balls to the walls. I was earning some extra cash on deployment and I still live at home, so it was the time for me where I could still do this without having my gf all over me

We'll most likely buy/rent a place somewhere within the coming year, so at that time I'll have a lot more bills to pay. If I were to upgrade my system then, I must say I'm not quite sure what my limit would be. Seeing that I'm someone who likes to have massive power under the hood, my limit will most likely be quite a bit higher than others so I'm guessing.. €750-800-ish? Not sure if the gf would agree though :D

I recently noticed this on the 1080 Strix... Any idea why? And/or if they will come back down pressumebly?

Well according to the place I got mine at it's because of Brexit but as soon as Brexit happened even if they had a lot of stock of said items, they put the prices of their GPU's up by £50.

And even when currencies level out I highly doubt they'll put the prices back down or if they do put prices down a little they'll make a big fuss and say "Aren't we good for putting prices down a little" even though they didn't really need to go up this much in the first place ^_^

Performance wise, I'll never be able to get enough.

Cost wise, I'd personally feel that it depends on the rest of the setup and how long it'd be before I'd upgrade.

For example, I feel that it was a tremendous waste that I spent £500 on my 780Ti back in the day. Mainly because AMD's offering ended up being a much better product and I'd hazard that when it came time to upgrade I would have more than likely got another card if it had been the 290/290x. As opposed to practically binning the card.

I spend £800 on my 1070s on launch day, which is something I've always spoke against but I had really been having a rough time with my Ti and I'd decided that £800 was much more reasonable than the £1200 for my original plan. A Pro duo. I couldn't be bothered to wait for AMD to catch up 9 months later, like they normally do.

Remember folks, never pay launch prices!

For me, right now my limit is £300, and that's a push. I'll probably have to wait a few months before I can do that too. I just can't afford massive expenses in one lump. I'll likely keep my tinkering going by slowly putting together a custom loop for the rig.

Once that's in place I'll try and save for a 2160p monitor and GPU but realistically I won't be paying more than £750 for the pair; I'll wait until I can meet the performance requirements at that price before jumping. It's going to be quite the sell to convince my wife it's worth it even at that price.

Given what state my finances are in due to spending the last couple of years caring for my mom, I'll be buying my next system on finance (for 12 months) and even then my absolute maximum would be around £300 on a GPU :(

Give me a card from the future along with the proper drivers to support any games that come out and I will pay a years salary after tax.

On a more serious note I ould pay depending on the performance tbh. With the shabby AUD, my limit would be around 800 for the top end. 1200 for dual gpus.

Amazing how much price changed since the 7xxx and 6xx series..

Wow this Titan X has really ruffled some feathers. I'm not talking about this forum but the Nvidiots are doing a great job of making this card sound crap.

And I find that amazing. So I guess in a way that answers the question. Even the biggest braggarts on OCUK can't afford this Titan X . My heart bleeds for them.

Incredible card under water though.

Did anyone see this video about Pascal been Maxwell on steroids.

With them moving to a new process and with maxwell been so good, did they just zoop it up at the new manufacturing process.

With graphics cards been so damn expensive these days and the prices always on the rise and with Nvidia having a good lead over AMD, it seems the prices are just going to keep going up.

I'd say my max limit would be £500, sold me r9 290x ready to buy a 1080, but with it been priced like a 1080ti and them already having the new titan x out now, I'm not willing to give them so much money, might wait for vega see how AMD do with that.

Obviously varies on a person to person basis, and likely depends on how much their income is...

The Titan's price is fine, IMO, it's meant for the absurd enthusiast level where they want to get 144FPS on ultra in 1440p or try for well above 60FPS on 4k.

For me, I limit my GPU purchases to ~$300 max, I simply don't need anything more powerful than what I can get in that pricerange... I would also prefer I buy a GPUs that will only last me about how long their warranty period is so that I'm covered for the entire duration of what I feel is acceptable for it's usage, and the $300 price-point has done that well enough... I get to upgrade every couple years for cheap to take advantage of new tech, and it's plenty powerful enough to run whatever I need it to at 1080p/1440p during those couple years.
