GPU Compare

Okay guys (and gals).

Looking at a NVIDA GPU for my gaming rig (have a separate rig I use for work and CAD) and I guess the main choices are:

1. GTX Titan
2. GTX Titan Ultra (TBR)
3. GTX 780
4. GTX 790 (TBR)
5. GTX 690

[EDIT] Given some of the new pending releases soon (hopefully) I thought id shorten then list to the ones in the survey.

Which one is better for gaming and why? Or how can I compare them fairly?

There are plenty reviews on the website that as much as say "AVOID" the Titan unless you want the bragging rights. The 780 makes so much more sense it is unreal.

Can't make a good call on a 790 as we don't know what that will be. Reviews also say that a 690 should outperform a 780 but it costs more and that is you already with an SLi setup.

Suppose the question is what games are you playing on what system and at what resolution because a GTX 770 might be more than good enough for a good time yet.

Titans are ok but not for single card usage, there are so many cheaper options giving more performance. For the price of a single Titan you could almost get two GTX 780s which would give nearly double the performance.

I would not count on seeing a GTX 790 or Titan Ultra, these are just speculation at the moment.

My favourite card out of the existing cards you have listed is the GTX 690, they are expensive but faster than a Titan or GTX 780 and although the GTX 690 uses SLI, it does it very well.

getting a titan is just not worth it as the 780 is almost as fast if not faster.
yeah there might be a 790 or another titan, but they might be quite some time away.
also, the "titan ultra" will just have a couple more cuda cores. i don't think performance will be much better.

I'd also not get a 690 as that thing already is SLI'd and could give you issues with some games. 780 is not that much slower and just one GPU.

Okay, in response to a few questions:

Will be running on 2x Dell UlstraSharp 30" and playing a variety of games.

Also assuming no 790 or Tital Ultra, lets just assume 780, 690 and Titan.

I am definitely after performance, will look into how two 780s SLI compared to the 690 or Titan.

yeah thats it. when you're looking at titan and 780 sli the 690 is really irrelevant because its just a tad better than one of those cards

the reference cards are pretty much all the same. some come with a longer warranty but thats about it. if you plan on watercooling them it would be easier to get a block of those.

if you want to get a non reference just look at reviews mate. i don't have all the numbers in my head in terms of which is the coolest / most quiet one but you'll find something you like

For the resolution you want to run at the GTX 690 is a non starter.

Are you really going to use two 30" monitors with the edges of the panels going right through the middle of your view.

Unless you are going to reduce the settings a bit, on some games you are going to need Titans in sli with their 6gb of vram.

I dont plan on reducing any settings.

So it is looking like the Titan vs 780 both as a pair in SLI with max settings on 2 x 30" and what is better.

Also importantly can you SLI two Titans or two 780 and still put in another GPU for CAD or other purposes? Should be able to since its not like the 690 which was dual-chip and I know would have issues based on my readings.

Im not a AMD fan - definitely a NVIDIA fanboy.

Its in an STH10 case with lots of fans so it wont be that quiet anyway.

Rig uses Xeon processors so they dont need water cooling. Unless someone can show me a good watercooling solution - I am always weary of leaks etc on expensive equipment.

Im also not one to overclock due to warranty etc, as this usually as far as I can tell does void the warranty.

If money is no option why not watercool them? Can overclock more and be silent..

Also on Sept. 25th AMD will be announcing new GPUs that should perform on par with a titan/780 and be as cheap or cheaper than a 780.. So my vote is to wait and see how it all turns out.

Ive decided to merge my gaming rig (new) and CAD rig together, im just getting back into gaming - left it for years, so hence the Xeons and need to add my CAD gpus (there is two using NVIDIA MAXIMUS).

So just checking two titans or 780s which run SLI can work in SLI if I also have MAXIMUS (Quadro+Tesla).

For gaming id personally not use xeons. They are great for cad and number crunching but as ive seen on here and all over ud be better with an i5 or i7 or the amd equivalent I need to learn these lol.

AMD lost my confidence with the 7950 and when they announced the 7990 as a competitor for the titan.

also if nvidia is going to call any gpu titan ultra i will go there and slap them.
