GPU Color Modification

I got the awesome MSI R9 270X 4G because it was a great deal with 4 Gb of memory,

(and I got it at the peak of the shortage, I saw them go in then out of stock within half an hour, but that is a different story).​

I'd love to be able to do a white build, but obviously this card's accent color is red.

Maybe some modders could help me try to work this out, I made a really crappy 5 minute photoshop job to kind of explain what I'm talking about.

(Side note, I once saw a modder make the red heatsinks of his MSI Z87 GD65 modo neon green, but he never mentioned how to do it, if anyone knows about that it would be cool to know too.)​

Btw, the 270x is quite pointless with 4GB of memory because it doesn't have the memory bandwidth to actually use it for fps gains at high resolution.

You could get some white carbon fibre vinyl or some matte vinyl and as for the Gaming logo, I'm not too sure other than get rid of it. I'm not sure if it comes straight off or if its attached btw in regards to the badge.

I'm pretty sure that with most cards you can remove the plastic shroud (and fans in some cases) without removing the heatsink. Just put the card with heatsink somewhere safe, mask the black bits of the plastic with tape and spraypaint the red bits.

You'd have to check if this is possible with this cooler as you own the card, and I haven't seen one of these MSI Gaming cards in person yet.

That logo's never going to work though.

the 270x is quite pointless with 4GB of memory because it doesn't have the memory bandwidth to actually use it for fps gains at high resolution.

I got 4GB in preparation to crossfire later, so the two cards wouldn't have to share a small(ish) 2GB frame buffer.

As for the color, I knew about vinyl dye, but for some reason it didn't occur to be to just tape over the black bits

As for the badge I could Just pop it off and deal with it or even just put a white cutout in its place, the badge isn't a big deal to me.

As for the mobo, finding black with white accents is killing me :microwave:

as for changing the colour of heatsinks on your motherboard, if they're ally, you could always get them anodised or use the same method to get a fully black motherboard and then vinyl paint the branding white?

Sanding the area and masking the rest would work, you could try touch up paint? or just spray paint.
With touch up paint i think you'd have to wet sand, so not such a great idea XD.

Just stick with sanding, masking, cleaning it up and then respraying the area.

Oh, I didn't know that ^_^. Anyway, finding a motherboard with a black heatsink on the NB or something and then painting the branding in any way you would like would probably look great.

I'm actually pretty sure someone on the forum has done this before with the heatsinks on an MSI MPower MAX and made the go from yellow highlights to white, it looked very sleek .

Im guessing your wanting to paint the ASUS M5A97 board in your sig?

The only problem i can see is that it would be quite difficult to get a new even coat across the inside and outside of the heatsink due to all the little fins.

You can remove the anodizing from the heatsinks with this method.

It should give you good base to paint onto as no blue would bleed through in the places that are hard to reach.

If you don't want to go down the DIY route with the heatsinks you could always send them off to be Anodized, the costs may not be worth it though.

Sorry, I don't think I was making that much sense, I was talking about for the OP because I thought I read that he was wanting to Do something to his motherboard like he mentioned in one of his posts.

I'd avoid using self adhesive vinyl for GPU shrouds they look great when you finish but.... give it a few days or even hours of gaming/folding or any general load heat they peel and blister like mad, probably best to give it a rub down and spray it.

Well what I would love to do is have an MSI Z87 GD65 with white accents instead of red on the chipset and power heatsinks.

My current mobo is shitty Gigabyte OEM style, but that will be gone soon in favor of whichever one I can find/mod with my color scheme.
