Goliath

Looks awesome. I would love to tinker with a kit like that. Soooo jealous.

Thanks. You better take advantage of that nvidia deal or else you're going to see me on your threats list soon

Edit: And you can! For $1250

That's actually a fantastic deal, for anybody who has that money. The CPUs alone are probably worth that much.

I still haven't added my 2600k and 560Ti to the mix and I have both my 470s and an i7 930 off because of heat. We've been in the mid to high 80s all week with ~80% humidity and I don't have AC!

Yeah I figured as much. The whole team seems to have scaled back for the summer. That goes back to this project and wanting as little heat output as possible. It's been in the 90s here the past few weeks and the AC struggles to keep the house below 82 sometimes.

I'm so ready for winter right now lol.

Edit: We haven't had this "low" of a 24hr average in awhile.

That $1250 for that SR2 bundle.....why did I get married!?

Because cooking and ironing suck...

Crazy build. I can smell the $100 bills burning from here.

lol, she's a good cook, but I iron my own clothes. I have high ironing standards, been ironing my own clothes since I was a kid.

I should have gotten out and played more.

My ex wife never cooked me a single meal. Her idea of ironing was throwing the clothes in the dryer for ten minutes.

No surprise then that we are divorced

I think my memory is causing my instability at > 188 BCLK. I need more time to test, but I'm going out of town for the next few days so it will have to wait a bit.

Better take something for the withdrawal you will have!

I really wanted to get it folding before I left but I just ran out of time. I think it's stable at 188 BCLK but I really want to hit 190 at least and it seems like at that mark the memory just gets really flaky. I have no doubt the CPUs can go higher, as they're stable at 188 at just 1.26v (possibly lower, haven't tested). I think the extra memory timings are out of whack or something. I'm also having issues with disappearing ram if I don't give the vdimms enough volts at a certain BCLK. At 180 I need 1.52... at 190 i need 1.6 just for all the ram to be visible. I'll need to do more testing when I get back on Sunday.

Finally settled on 185 bclk...I think I need better ram if I want to get it stable at 190+.

Here are some pics of the final setup. As you can see I have the H60 on the second cpu and the Xigmatek on the first. I'm getting about 60C across all cores while folding in a room about 24C ambient...not too bad.

Edit: I also switched out the video card with a cheap 8400GS which uses much less power than the Radeon I had in there.

All cores at 100%

HFM.net screenshot. HFM doesn't have ppd numbers for beta units, but at that time per frame I'm looking at around 170k ppd.

How come i can't find any info about having like a 4 CPU socket mainboard? Think of 4 Xeon's, Overclocked on WATER!,I Used to have a Xeon setup 10 years ago when i lived in the netherlands, I cooled it with an Aqurium pump lol, Hosted CS1.6 server and 3 quake 3 servers from one computer it was awesome

Basically, there are no enthusiast 4 socket boards. You would be limited with a server board and stuck with no overclocking options.

ESXi

The goal of Goliath was to create a dedicated folding machine where I could maximize my points per day while minimizing the amount of power draw and heat it outputs. Since I live in Florida, this is important for me. The machine will serve a second purpose - it will act as a server/VM host for a test lab for different things...

Initially I thought I'd install VMware's ESXi hypervisor and from there create an Ubuntu VM for folding, a Windows 7 VM and any Windows server VMs that I'd want. However, both ESXi and Citrix's Xen Server are limited to having 8 virtual CPUs in a single VM. This is not going to cut it for me..

My current plan will be to install Ubuntu for the OS and then install VMware Workstation. Within workstation I'll be able to create my Windows/server VMs. Not quite as elegant as using ESXi, but it'll have to do until ESXi supports more vcpus in a VM.

The specs:

-EVGA SR-2 motherboard

-2 x Xeon hexcore E5645 processors

-2 x Xigmatek GAIA SD1283 heatsinks

-12GB G.Skill DDR3 1600 memory

-Seasonic X750 Gold PSU

-1TB WD Black

-Mountain Mods HPTX-SR2 motherboard tray (no case, this will be a naked computer)

I'm hoping to clock the Xeons at 3.4-3.6 for now. I will try to go higher when summer ends and it cools off, probably to 3.8 if I can.

The motherboard came in yesterday..the rest of the parts should be here today. I'll try to update this thread with pics whenever I get a chance. But for now, a little teaser:

Hello!

I know there has been quite some time since your original post, but were you ever successful in getting ESXi running on your rig? If so, what is/was the performance? Were there any issues or obstacles you had to overcome? I am very interested in getting ESXi running on my own SR-2 rig. Thanks!!!
