going from 120 volts to 240/220 volts?

Hey everyone,

I was thinking this morning about converting my 120 volt outlet to a 240 outlet to run my computer off of. I know many of you all are from the UK area so you probably already use well 220.

The reason for this is to cut costs on the monthly bill. I know that if you run things off of 240 then in turn you get a cheaper monthly bill due to how the current is pulled.

For those that do use 240 or have already done this, are there any tips or anyone that could tell me not to do it and why?

Or even just tell me what you think?

You would need to change the breaker and the outlet to 240, which would require an electrician. 240 requires a thicker gauge wire as well.

Edit: actually with 220 you could still use 12/2. If you have an older house though it may have 14/2.

Ya i was just seeing if anyone had done this in the US and if so was it worth it? I have a breaker here which is how i get the idea and it is the same amps just a 2 pole not a single pole. So I would just need to go out and get some 12/3 wire and run it. But it is looking like it is not worth the work....

If your psu is 120 volts and you are changing to 230v then it will fry your pc;)

Make sure you have a converter!

How would this lower the electricity bill anyway? You will still be pulling the same number of Watts just at a lower amperage.

Some one i knew swithced the switch on the back of his PSU from 230v to 110v when it was running; he fused his house and blew his PSU, i lol'ed
