Get data off a laptop hard drive

lo all,

Right, my girlfriend has an old laptop that will not power on at all. We changed the battery but it seems that something went wrong inside and i do not know much about laptops. So she got a new one, but wants the data (pics etc) off the old hard drive.

Whats the best way to get this data? Is there a cable that I can connect the laptop hard drive to my desktop via IDE/Sata if I take it out of the laptop?

If the laptop drive is a IDE drive then you will need to get a 2.5 to 3.5 converter cable. If it is a SATA drive you can connect it using the standard SATA power and data cables in your PC

Thanks all, will get one of these off ebay and rip out the laptop hard drive. My gf will be very happy to get all her pics etc back!

Little gadgety things are great, I`ve gone the whole hog and got a 38 pin to 40 pin thingy, and an ide to sata - so whatever comes out of the laptops I can sata them.

Good job cos the work pcs don`t use ide anymore >.<

We've been finding this with fujitsu siemens desktops, what annoys me even more is the lack of PS2 ports. I want them back!!
