Get a 2011 i7 3820 or wait for the Ivy Bridge 3770k

reading these posts kinda makes me regret not getting a 3820 even though it woulda made my build cost well over 300$ more lol currently using the 2500k but I don't do any modeling so its noth really needed

yeh but getting the 2011 platform would be more future proof than the 1155 platform. Plus i have sucessfully managed the OC the 3820 to 4.75ghz! see my topic in the overclocking section.

3770K. If it were say a 3930K then it'd be a no brainer

If my 3930k ocs like that when i get my rampage back from asus i shall be more than a happy bunny. Good job on the 3820 did you get the mushkin ram aswell

Hello, Noob here! Yes I have OCed B4 but Im new to the forums. I saw this topic and could not resist. I am also torn between the 3820 and the 3770 at this point. This isn't helped by all the conflicting information. Here is a summery from what I have gathered so far...

3870

+Built for media editing, encoding ect...

+Suports quad channel memory

+Locked but can still OC to around 4.5 on air.

-Runs at 130w

-x79 is more $$$ (Can get some good deals on boards and RAM now!!!)

?Intel says "Yes" and "No" to PCIe 3.0 (it has 40 PCIe lanes)

?Runs ??? faster then 2600K (clames of 15% to 50%)

?Runs hotter/colder then 2600k

3770k

+Built for regular PC use, gaming, ect...

+22nm with trigate

+Runs at 77w

+Runs 5% to 20% faster then 2600k

+Unlocked

+7ghz liquid cooled (cannot seem to find any air cooled OC)

+PCIe 3.0

+z77 boards are cheap (Im going to bet z77 boards will cost the same as x79 boards with the same features. Not counting p67, I dont trust "Buy Now BIO Update Later" boards, usualy too many issues.)

-Reports claim runs cooler then 2600k idel, but hotter under load!

Most important question is...

*How hot it runs compaired to the 2600K/3770K

*Can it REALY support PCIe 3.0

* How fast is it realy compaired to the 2600K/3770K

I have seen indipendent testers say the 3820 is way faster in media editing, and about the same in everything else compaired to the 2600k. Then benchmarkers say the 3770k is only 5-20% faster then the 2600k, but every "Official/Unofficial" benchmarks show the 3770k dominating the 3820? WTH? Along with intel's yes/no on PCIe 3.0, I smell something, and it aint pretty?

all these claims are fantastical, but until we see the ivy bridge chips "out in the wild" i'm only really expecting the 3770k to be a 2700k with intel 4000 graphics.

plus personally i'd like to see how reliable these tri-gate resistors are as its a new technology with possible teething problems

I think the 2011 will have a better upgrade path as it is the newer socket and I read somewhere that IB may be the last 1155 socket CPU.

Not 100% on that though

2011 processors are too expensive for me however, so I'm going for Ivy Bridge. That said, I'm already upgrading from a 1366 socket so I have had to re-buy everything else as well. I think I'll go for 2011 socket on my next rig, but use Ivy Bridge to upgrade this one.

If you can afford it, why not go for the Socket 2011? As people have said, faster performance and better upgrade paths.
