GeForce GTX 880 Really Does Have 8GB Of Memory

8GB ? That's a bit of a step up from 3GB on a standard GTX card, 4K ready anyone ? ^_^

An engineering sample (ES) of the GeForce GTX 880 was intercepted on its way from a factory in China, to NVIDIA's development center in India, where it will probably undergo testing and further development. The shipping manifest of the courier ferrying NVIDIA's precious package was sniffed out by the Chinese press. NVIDIA was rather descriptive about the ES, in its shipping declaration. Buzzwords include "GM204" and "8 GB GDDR5," hinting at what could two of the most important items on its specs sheet. GM204 is a successor of GK104, and is rumored to feature 3,200 CUDA cores, among other things, including a 256-bit wide memory bus. If NVIDIA is cramming 8 GB onto the card, it must be using some very high density memory chips. The manifest also declares its market value at around 47,000 Indian Rupees. It may convert to US $780, but adding all taxes and local markups, 47,000 INR is usually where $500-ish graphics cards end up in the Indian market.

Holy hell 8gb, but then if the industry wants to push 4k they kind of have to start with this sort of stuff.

Exciting though, cant wait to see what it is.

If this is real then I cant wait for the 9xx series, I've started saving up for Z107 and the 9xx series already so I'll be nicely prepared for when both hit and can get the top of the range stuff when it's available

Indeed, Just like there's no point going from Z87 to Z97 unless you NEED M.2 and Sata-Express.

Although I know these small steps are needed for the big ones to occur I just get so impatient waiting for the proper good stuff which we wont see until this time next year .

Exactly. Will be interesting to see what the 880 full specs will be, I will look out for the EVGA GTX 880 SC w/ACX and see how much they will sell it on Scan for. I've gone from 8800 Ultra -> 580 -> 780 so my next step will be a 980.

Yeah same here pretty much, I want to be wow'ed so buying every 2nd generation seems the logical step forward

It is logical, although 8GB of VRAM does sound tasty but pointless at the mo at 1440p

I was thinking the same thing, no doubt we will have a Vram war between AMD and Nvidia when the Nvidia 800 and AMD 300 series are out.

Crysis 3 at 4K uses 3.6GB on a Titan and I've seen it go up to 4.1GB, Far Cry 3 at 4K I've also seen shoot past 4GB.

Battlefield 4 at 4K I've seen use 5GB on a Titan and with games coming out like the Witcher 3 which looks like it's going to melt current systems.

At 4K I think it will go beyond 4GB easily making 8GB a viable number.

I've seen Skyrim with a mountain of mods running at 4k eat through 4.2Gb on a Titan, So I can see the appeal of more vram but only for the most extreme of gamers.

True but that's with mods, The games I mentioned above are without mods just with in game settings at max.

Simply because Skyrim looks like a dogs arse without Mods but I know what you mean especially with the Witcher 3 coming soon, that game is going to kill so many systems.
