Gaming Rig Thoughts?

Hey guys, so one of my friends decided that he wanted to build a gaming PC. He will not be overclocking, by the way. You will see that there is an i7 there, but he really insisted upon it, so there is nothing I can do... Anyway, what do you guys think?

Bit overkill on the PSU, I'd personally settle for an RM650, or step up to an RM850 to support SLI later down the road.

Other than that, the Bitfenix mATX cases aren't really the best for aircooling, or watercooling, or... anything really. But if he really, really likes the looks then fair enough.

It seems like the Caviar Black is not available? But that's alright cause the Caviar Blue has very similar specs (7200 RPM, 64Mb cache) and should even be a bit cheaper.

I'd go for a reference 780ti as the blower type cooler works slightly better then the windforce in an environment with less than ideal air flow. I'd also look at a different case. Whats his budget?

Okay, the PSU will change to an RM 650. Which 780ti do you guys prefer for aircooling as I'll get him to change the case. His budget for a case is basically anything. What do you guys suggest?

If you get the Arc Minnnnnnnnni R2, you can stick with the mATX setup.

Other than that, it looks pretty good.

Yeah, I know, but originally we had an ATX setup. Then he decided to change the case to that BitFenix one, so it had to be mATX. Now we are back to good old ATX. Thanks for the help, guys.

$99 could also get you the Enthoo Pro, a favourite case of mine, just saying. Either will serve him fine ;)

Good luck on the build!

He likes the Arc Midi, so I wont bother changing it. If he really wants to, I showed him the link to this forum thread. As to the good luck wished on the build, he is actually going to build it... Thats the part that worries me, but he says he knows how. Ill link him to some videos just to be sure. :D

Can you not help him in person and walk him through it?

Not much that can go wrong these days though. As long as he remembers to ground himself and can get the CPU cooler installed cause that one's a bitch

I would help him, but he lives in a different country. Ill run him through all the safety procedures and stuff over facebook. Then, hope for the best.

Just tell him to be very carefull with the pins on the motherboard, thats an easy mistake to make

Hes just told me that he is getting some company to build it for him. Its the same one that he is ordering the components from. Im not really worried at all. All he has to do now is maybe fix some cable managment or something ;)

Hey mate,

I would recommend the following changes:
CPU: change to 4770, as not much point in getting the 4790 (if you can find 4770 cheaper)
Motherboard: find a cheaper H87/97 one instead, since they wont be overclocking
Videa Card: if willing change to 290x/290
Case: get the Fractal Define r4 instead (the Arc Midi looks ugly!) But if he likes the midi better then oh well.

Most of the above is assuming you want a cost efficient build.

Also tell your friend hes and idiot for demanding an i7 for a gaming PC ;)

I've actually got him to change to an i5. As for the motherboard, I've chosen a really solid one, because I'm not willing to risk any sort of failure. Also, he wanted a ROG board, but I steered him away from that. This seems like a good compromise. As for the case, the Arc Midi R2 has better airflow, and actually looks better in my opinion. He seems to like it, so I'm not about to change it. Thanks for the feedback anyway!
