Gaming Rig - Kit list advise please?

Hi all,

It's been 5 years since I've logged on here (though I have lurked from time to time) and that was when I last built a PC, so I'm a little out of practice.

I've ordered the following, but before I open it all up and get started I wanted to check if I've made the right decisions...?

Case: Obsidian 750D Full Tower ATX Case
Motherboard: Asus MAXIMUS VII HERO Z97 Socket 1150 VGA DVI HDMI 8-ch audio ATX
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz 8MB S1150
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i Hydro Series Extreme Performance CPU Cooling
Memory: Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Pro Series Red 16GB 2x8GB, PC3-19200 (2400), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 11-13-13-31, XMP, 1.65V - CMY16GX3M2A2400C11R
GC: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti 1006MHz 3GB PCI-E 3.0 HDMI SC w/ ACX
Boot Drive: Plextor M6e M.2 PCI-E 256GB Solid state Hard Drive (PX-G256M6e)
SSD: Crucial MX100 512GB SATA 2.5” SSD CT512MX100SSD1
OS: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro 64 Bit (decided to give it a go!)
PSU: Enermax Infiniti - 720W (EIN720AWT) (an old PSU from another build)

Use will be mostly high end gaming FPS and driving sims.
I do plan to overclock a little bit, but nothing major.

My questions are:
Have I made good choices?
Have I chosen the right memory and speed, I'll admit to being very confused with what memory to go with.
Will my old PSU power everything?
Anything I've missed or should consider?
Advise on monitors, I want 3 at 1080P and frameless as possible?

I've probably got a load of other questions, but these will do to start with.

All in all a pretty good build.... only things I'd change are A: The case, I'd go Air 540 or H440. B: The GPU vendor, not really a fan of EVGA at present but kudos on the 780Ti.

Sorry, but if its just for gaming the i7 is wasted. I'd be tempted to replace the PSU as while it is pretty solid, its getting on a bit so its days are numbered.

Why those cases over the 750D? Better cooling, materials, sound deadening?
I chose the 750D as it looks good, seems quite solid, plenty of room and good cable management.
 
+1 for the i5 4690K, it is pretty solid for gaming, you don't need the extra power that the i7 offers. As the others told you, I would spent the extra money in a better psu, I will choose another vendor for the GPU, such as Gainward which has done a great job with their Phantom 780ti, and here in France it costs less than the EVGA one. Anyway the rest of the parts you picked are pretty nice, hope to see your build finished soon ;)

I do tend to over spec these things, as I don't upgrade my PCs that often and I will have other uses for it like photo editing etc.
The cost differences between the i5 and i7 isn't that great, so I thought why not get the best. I'd already talked myself down from a six core 4930k! :)

Which PSU would you recommend?

Fair play, I know the feeling as I had to talk myself down from getting a xeon ^_^.
If you're going to stick with a single card config I'd say a solid gold rated 650w psu from either Coolermaster,Corsair, EVGA/Superflower,Seasonic or Antec. I'd also say get a modular PSU as well.
 
I'm actually voting Phanteks Enthoo Pro for the case.

Get an RM850/AX860 PSU with that and you'll have plenty wattage to go SLI later.

I almost certainly will go SLI, again I had to talk myself out of doing it from the beginning. Decided to wait though until 1440P or 4k monitors come down a bit and I upgrade them. From what I've read a single 780ti seems fine for 3 x 1080p on ultra settings for most games.
 
For the three screens I'm looking at the following options:
Dell UltraSharp U2414H 23.8 inch Widescreen IPS LCD Monitor (1920 x 1080, 2M:1, 250 cd/m2, 8 ms, HDMI/DP/mini DP/USB )
Pros: VESA mount, DP, amazingly thin 6.05mm border
Cons: 8ms

Acer H236HL 23 inch Widescreen IPS LED Monitor (16:9, 250 cd/m2, 100M:1, 1920 x 1080, 5ms, HDMI/DVI/VGA)
Pros: ZeroFrame design, 5ms
Cons: no VESA

I think the Dell is edging it for me at the moment.

I have the Acer monitor you mentioned. I love it except for the fact that(and this goes for any thin bezel monitor) the actual display is about half an inch short of reaching the bezel. Its just black till it hits the bezel. The options to change the settings are okay but not the most extensive amount i have seen that can be changed. Other than that i love it. I would have opted for the 27" model but it came out after i got this. Its a good monitor and for gaming it is solid and never misses a beat. The screen tears sometimes but thats my fault for pushing 90FPS into the monitor when it can only show 60, but that goes for any monitor:p

Thanks. I've read about the display not actually running to the edge of the glass, so that won't be a surprise. I'm not sure I'd get 3 x 27" in my small office! Lol
Was yours level? I've read about them having an issue where one side sits lower, not so noticeable if you only have one I assume?
 
Not level? Nope not noticed that. You can only tilt it so there should be no reason for it to be sagging low on one side. Its held on by a few screws in the back. Not really much can go wrong. Only thing that happens is since it is so light, if you bump your desk it wobbles a tad.
 
Nothing wrong with the 750D but it's very cluttered and over-featured out of the box in my opinion although lovely on the outside. I would run the hell away from anything with an ACX cooler on it as the fans will die before the card and I've heard of many rattling fin stacks too. If your going SLI get the reference nvidia blowers they are solid.

+1 on the U2414H's
+1 on the AX860

And if you want it to look the business inside without modding +1 to a different case. If your not a clean freak however it is a nice thing. Just a shame Corsair George lost his mind on an anti-screwdriver rampage.
