Game: X-Men, Origins. Wolverine, Uncaged Edition

X-Men Origins, Wolverine comes from Activision, the team which also gave us the much loved Call of Duty series, amongst others. The game follows the plot of the X-Men, Origins movie which tells the story of James Howlett, also known as Wolverine, which takes place before the other X-Men movies. Now I have always liked the X-Men, but I have not read a lot of the comics, and Wolverine was always my favourite in the cartoons, films and other X-Men games, but I always wished that there was a bit more blood and gore. I would think sometimes, what damage you could do with those claws, and after playing this game for a bit, I found out what they are able to do.
The beginning of the game, after the cut-scene intro, has you plummeting back down to the ground, taking fire, without a parachute. Why would you want to do it the easy way, just feel sorry for the guy you land on top of. Then it is on to the intro fight, which tells you the buttons to use, as all games do, and I noticed that the graphics were shockingly better than I expected, and the fighting was more fun than I’ve had in a while. But I spent the first fight looking at my controls pressing random hit buttons. This is a hack and slash game with some puzzle solving elements put in. You will level up as you gain experience, which will give you some skill points to spend on upgrading you health or skills. You will also find mutagens that you can equip which gives you bonuses like extra health, rage, and extra experience points for each kill. You get fighting skills to use as well, like my favourite, claw spin attack.
Now this is not the type of game I have come to expect from Marvel. This is a violent game, more than I expected it to be. Probably one of the most violent fighting games I have played yet. After having a fight with some baddies, I noticed that one of them was missing both his arms and another was missing both his legs. So, I thought to myself, I have to try this again. When I found another bunch of victims, I mean baddies, I started to pay more attention to the fight and realised that someone’s head just went flying off, trailing blood as it arched through the air, and I noticed quite a few limbs were not where they were supposed to be either, and quite a bit of blood around, so much blood. Also seeing the damage to my body after accidently hitting something that exploded in my face and being able to see bits of my body missing, even half of my stomach, right down to ribs and intestines. Your bones stay in one piece, they’re Adamantium after all. Then doing it again just so I could watch it all grow back and go back to normal, so much fun. I can see why they put an age rating of 18 on this game.
The most common fights you will get into will be against people your own size, but you can sometimes get overpowered as it is normally a mix of different types of enemies like ranged, melee and there is also enemies that go invisible. When you are fighting some the bigger enemies, it gets kind of repetitive, jump at them and keep pressing the hit button until they fall, sometimes you will have to face off against 2 big baddies, which makes it harder as while you are facing one, the other will hit you off, but getting the timing right does help.
Some of the battles were done amazingly, like fighting a helicopter, hanging on to it trying to take it down while you’ve got someone trying to shoot you. The boss battles comes in the form of fighting other mutants, like Sabertooth, and was harder than fighting a group of enemies, but the use of the environment helped here, as it did with the smaller enemies, but I did find that the enemies could also use the environment to their advantage, AI that works. I also found bits of the fighting hilarious. When it came to the last man standing, he started screaming “I don’t want to die” and ran for the hills. Off with his head.
I found that the puzzles were not that hard to figure out with the use of the feral senses. These “senses” help guide you and highlight the items in the world that you can interact with. Some of them I did have to stop and think about. They also help with finding the dog tags that you can collect (for experience points) along with the action figures (unlock bonus challenges).
There is no multiplayer as yet, but with the hope of downloadable content there could be updates which might add this feature plus additional missions, you never know. There are also bonus challenges that you get out of the story after finding two of the action figures The bonus challenges is a one on one fight between you and the classic wolverine. If you manage to win the fight you get another costume to wear, like the old classic spandex outfits. Classic, Original and two other costumes I haven’t got to yet can then be worn in the game, beats looking at a white tank top that disappears half way through a level, after getting covered in blood, battered and torn, it will disappear bit by bit.
My final thoughts on the game are that the graphics are amazing during the fights, especially the jungle scenery. The fighting was fantastic but can be repetitive against the bigger enemies. Wolverine is a brilliant character and he makes an even more brilliant game. For a single player game this is definitely one of the best games I have played in a long time. Unfortunately, there is no multiplayer/online activity as yet, so I am going to have to give this game an 8/10. Don’t you just love this last picture, says it all really.
